There is a compressed output button, should be clicked by default, but you may want to double check. Really helps reduce strain on the server, I think.

You might also want to try in the server setting area, making sure persistant connection is turned off, I believe that strains the server as well. Says it should be fine on a dedicated server, but might be the cause?

Is ZLIB enabled (in Apache I think) otherwise the compression output won't work.

Is there a size limit for the avatars? Does it resize it automatically?
