AUGUST 17, 2010

Bucs declare local TV blackout

In an effort to avoid the needless drama leading up to the official deadline, the Bucs are declaring an official blackout for Saturday's preseason game against the Chiefs.

The NFL requires a sellout at least 72 hours prior to kickoff, a deadline that would come Wednesday night. But the team is still well short, so much so that it proceeded with making the news official a day early. The last Bucs game to be blacked out was on Oct. 26, 1997.

Three games were blacked out last week in the NFL, including games in San Diego and Cincinnati -- both of which were playoff teams last season.

The game will be shown on tape delay on Channel 8 on Sunday at 11 a.m.

There shouldn't be blackouts in the preseason...

Start of a trend, sad to say. Guess the Glazers didn't want to pony up the cash to buy up the remaining tickets like last year.

Watch the delay, go the game, or use the Internet to your advantage.

They will be in the habit of announcing all the blackouts early to try and boost sales for each blacked out game.

It's not just the Chiefs game, either ...

SR, so all those years of empty preseason games (not just the Bucs) were not blacked out because the owners bought the remaining tickets? Is that the only difference this year?

I thought Lovie said he wanted quickness & speed, even at the QB position?

Except for last season, the Bucs usually sold out their season tickets. A lot of people who have to buy tickets to the preseason as part of the season ticket package just choose not to go to the preseason games. It's like that with most teams around the league.

I hate this policy, if the NBA, NHL, AND MLB had the same policy countless games would be blacked out each season. Having said that, the Glazers have nobody to blame but themselves.

Used to listen to all the Bucs home games in the 80's and early 90's on the radio, looks like we've come full circle.

Why do you necessarily have to be wrong just because a few million people think you are?
