Edsall to Maryland

Kinda surprised at the move to be honest.
After a spate of reports Sunday afternoon pointing to Randy Edsall as the successor to Ralph Friedgen, Maryland has officially confirmed the obvious.

Via a press release, the school announced that the now-former UConn head coach has been named to the same job with the Terps.

A press conference has been scheduled for 2 p.m. ET Monday to introduce Edsall.

Edsall, the reigning Big East Coach of the Year, will replace Friedgen, the reigning ACC Coach of the Year.  In 12 years at UConn, Edsall compiled a 74-70 record.  In 10 years at Maryland, Friedgen compiled a 75-50 record.

For a school that maintained that part of the reason for ridding themselves of Friedgen was due to the fact that attendance and fan interest had dwindled, the hiring of a younger, skinnier version of Friedgen is at best a suspect move.  At worst, it’s a clear signal that athletic director Kevin Anderson is in way over his head, even more so than he was at Army when it came to football hires.

Anderson embarrassed a former alum and loyal Terp soldier who completely turned around a moribund football program for… this hire?

Anderson should be ashamed of how he treated Friedgen.  And the Terrapin faithful should be besides themselves for how this botched and bungled situation has transpired.

It may prove to be the right hire — or the same hire, based on track records — but it was a very crappy way to go about it.

He's a good coach, nothing special, but we had a good coach, nothing special in Fridge.  This guy is just Fridge Jr.  And yes, Leach was something special.  At least we have the best QB in the ACC so we'll still win the next few years.  It's after he leaves that we'll have problems.

It's not a lateral move at all for Edsall.  I'm not trying to hype up Maryland here, but it's indisputably a better conference, a better recruiting base, and a program with more history.

He did say ALMOST a lateral move ... The ACC is only a marginally better conference at this point in time but Md does have the tradition, recruiting base and fan base over UConn.

I wouldn't judge him too too harshly as a recruiter yet. Half of those years were spent at the non-BCS level and there can't be many BCS programs with a tougher road to hoe as far as recruiting goes than UConn ... Should do a lot better job  further South.

 I wouldn't even say almost. With TCU joining the Big E, the conferences are about the same (unless Goldson pulls off a big surprise in Miami-could happen). Maryland has a little more FB history, but still far from a team people consider a powerhouse.

Maybe it is just time for a change in scenery for Edsell. I will say he is closer (geographically) to the recruiting pool (the SE+ West Pa ) now.

TCU joining the Big East isn't a plus for other schools.  You think UConn ever sniffs a BCS game again when TCU comes?  They took advantage of the worst conference in BCS history to make the game, so he leverages it into a better job while he still can.

That's coaching, not talent evaluation/recruiting.  Notice how none of them are really doing anything much in the NFL?  Let's look at them...
RB - Donald Brown, 2 years / 24 GP.. 1 start - NONE this year
DT - Darius Butler, 2 years / 26 GP.. 5 starts - NONE this year
RT - William Beatty, 2 years / 16 GP.. 4 starts - Can't stay healthy... hurt all this year.
LB - Alfred Fincher, 4 years / 38 GP... 0 starts - Out of the league.
DB - Tyvon Branch, 3 years / Darn good safety.
QB - Dan Orlovsky... Nothing need be stated here... right?
FB - Deon Anderson... after 3 years, released by Dallas.  No one picked him up for 2010 season.
RT - Donald Thomas... 3 years / 17 GP... 13 starts.  NONE this year.  Lost starting job in T.C.
DB - Robert McClain... Rookie season, didn't play much... only 8 games and 0 starts.  Not good when playing for the Panthers.
