Watching Osi Umenyiora dominate against both the pass and the run yesterday against the Redskins made me pretty jealous. Our guys look like high schoolers compared to the way he plays the run.

I want a speed rusher as well, but IMO a complete end would be preferable. Stylez and Crowder both get pushed around against the run and are a big part of our crappy run D.

I completely agree that we need a DE first, but I think the next need is at OL not LB. Of course you have to take BPA though, but it has to fit some sort of need as well. And if there is no stand out DE left it gets tricky, we need to go defense with the first pick IMO, but without a DE I think our best bet is to trade down if we can.

I haven't heard much about the theory of just trading down. We are in a great position with a lot of young players. We don't have to gamble, if we are not in love with who is at 20, let's trade down. We have no idea what Magee and Bennett will be and if we are going to get a pass rush specialist that can't play the run I would not want to waste a first round pick on that. Honestly,

I do like Kerrigan, not as a pass rusher, but I like the fact that we will never have to wonder about his motor. this kid seems like a quality player that will be solid for years at DE. If he is there. grab him, if not trade down.

OK, so since the consensus is that a DE should be taken, it's just a matter of which one. Yes, of course we want Bowers, but unless we trade up for him, he's LONG gone. Luckily, this years draft class is pretty stacked...

What should the number 20 pick be used for?

1. Quinn (If he's still available)
2. Clayborn (Bothers me that effort is an issue, i.e. he's  #2 for now. Based on '09 and measureables)
3. Kerrigan (Still debating if he should be 2 or 3. The Nation's leader in tackles for loss speaks volumes, however.)
4. Trade Down
5. Allen Bailey / J.J. Watt - Pretty even on these two. (Bailey will be available later, so 2nd round may a chance. JJ may be gone by 20. If so, not really that horrific of a loss as he's more a 3-4 DE anyway.)

Von Miller from A&M seems to be a 3-4 OLB fit (6' 3" 250lbs) so that explains why he didn't make the list. That's about it. hopefully we go LB/OL 2nd round. Either one, but more of a need at OL I would think.

I agree , it doesn't make sense.

Good news is we need defensive line , and the Giants are already loaded at D-line , so it shouldn't hurt us too much.

I don't understand this logic. We aren't the team we were 2 years ago with swiss cheese holes all over the roster. We have specific needs. We should be able to fill a few holes in free agency, God willing the ownership decides we don't need to have the lowest payroll in the league again (fingers crossed the new CBA sets a new salary floor and they are REQUIRED to spend in free agency) and we should be closing in on a solid playoff birth with potential to do some damage.

What if the BPA is a QB or a WR, do we really pick one? I hope not.

I understand going BPA from a few select positions, but not BPA across the board.

This is my rankings for DE (If someone isn't listed its because I do not think they would fit good in our system):
1. Bowers
2. Quinn
3. Kerrigan
4. Bailey
5. Watt
6. Beal
7. Sheard
8. Romeus
9. Acho

I would have Quinn as the number 1 DE in the class. Bowers 2nd and then Kerrigan.

We will be in a tough spot though after the first, we will have to decide whether to work on the OL early and protect our biggest investment or keep retooling a weak D. We can accomplish both but it will be tough.

I just dont see it with Kerrigan - talk about effort all you want but you also need top end talent and I just do not see it in him.  Was he "dominant"??  If so why is he not mentioned with the likes of Bowers, Quinn, etc?  Plus seriously a Big Ten guy - yeah there are a lot of top DE's to come from that overrated conference - sorry but Big Ten players as a whole do not give me a lot of hope.  Name the last Big Ten dominant player??  I would go a top MLB like Kelvin Sheppard or even a top CB or OLB over Kerrigan as I just don't see the drop from him to the others.

First of all, he was the most consistantly dominant d end over the past few years.

He had 7 sacks his rookie season, 7 his sophomore season, 11 last season, and 12.5 this past season. not to mention leading in tackles for loss. Has anyone else been that productive? Nope.

And there are numerous other d ends to come out of purdue alone over the past couple of years that have been good[ray edwards, shaun phillips, cliff avril, among others]...so I don't know where you're getting that 2nd part from. I suggest doing some research first before trying to make an argument
