As the 2011 NFL Draft approaches, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be hosting collegiate prospects on visits at One Buc Place. The team also will hold some private workouts with players. In this thread the Pewter Report staff will add to a list of players that the Bucs are hosting or working out. The last three first-round picks for Tampa Bay all visited the team facility before the Bucs selected them in the first round. The thread will be updated throughout the draft process.

I read the Bucs have had a few interviews with QB Josh Portis and have a work out scheduled. Seems like a nice fit to replace Josh Johnson as back up. Is there any truth to these rumors?

Why exactly are we replacing JJ.

Because he is a FA next year and will surely leave for a team that gives him a chance to compete for the starting job. There are also the rumors about trading him to the 49ers. It would be wise to start coaching a new kid this year so we aren't stuck with Rudy Carpenter and a rookie as our only back up options next year.

Portis has said he has talked to the Bucs several times.  So there seems to be some interest.  On the flip side, he has a checkered past.  He has bounced around a couple different schools and I think he has a couple arrest on his resume also.  Supposedly a pretty good athlete though.

University of Texas cornerback Curtis Brown is in heavy demand with several upcoming visits and workouts, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation.


That includes the New England Patriots, Baltimore Ravens, New Orleans Saints, Chicago Bears, Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Cleveland Browns.


Brown ran the 40-yard dash in 4.51 seconds at the NFL scouting combine and registed a 10-8 broad jump and a 38-inch vertical leap.


He's regarded as a good fit for man or zone coverage schemes.


He was named second-team all-conference last season, recording 26 tackles, one for a loss, an interception and six pass deflections.


As a junior, he was named honorable-mention All-Big 12 Conference with 53 tackles, 15 on special teams, an interception returned for a touchdown, a forced fumble, blocked punt and 15 pass deflections.


A four-year starter, Brown finished with 120 career tackles, two interceptions, three tackles for losses and 35 career special-teams tackles. He returned 14 punts for 199 yards.

I'm all for bringing in someone to compete for a back up job next year but we still have him for another year and he is a very good back up. Unless we get a 3rd or better its useless to trade him IMO.

We can start to get a feeling for what the bucs are trying to do with this years draft by seeing who we're taking looks at. I like what I see so far.

Looks like the Bucs are really interested!

As interested as the Bucs are in learning the deeper aspects of their players, I am inclined to think that at least for the first two rounds, the players chosen  will have been invited to OBP.

I have wanted Cannon to be drafted in the 2nd round, but, at least so far, he is not scheduled to come to OBP. So until that happens, it doesn't seem the Bucs are interessted in Cannon.

The Bucs might take Amukamara or T. Smith, but I don't think they believe either of these two would drop low enough for the Bucs to trade up.  They might both be gone by pick 10.  Nevertheless the Bucs are preparing just in case.

In the case of C. Jordan, the Bucs might trade up to 15 or 17, if he were still available.  Of course this takes some co-operation from the team at 15 or 17.

This leaves Houston and Kerrigan. 

Jacksonville has been linked with Kerrigan, and Morris has been linked with Houston and,  of course, Jordan.

Ayers is the only other 1st round choice that has been invited and he is slower in the 40 than Houston.  Don't quite know why Ayers was invited unless it is to create a bit of false interest.
