Robed Muslim clerics kicked off U.S. flight after pilot refuses to take off with them (and they were en route to conference on Islamophobia)

Two Muslim religious leaders were asked to leave a commercial airliner in Memphis - and were told it was because the pilot refused to fly with them aboard.

Masudur Rahman and another imam had already been allowed to board their Delta Connection flight from Memphis, Tennessee, to Charlotte, North Carolina before they were asked to get off the plane.

Ironically, the two men were headed to a North American Imams conference discussing Islamophobia or fears of Islam and discrimination against American Muslims.

Racism? Masudur Rahman and Mohamed Zaghloul were removed from a flight to North Carolina because the pilot did not want to fly with them
'It's racism and bias because of our religion and appearance and because of misinformation about our religion.' Mr Rahman said. 'If they understood Islam, they wouldn't do this.'

Mr Rahman said he and Mohamed Zaghloul, of the Islamic Association of Greater Memphis, were cleared by security agents and boarded the plane for an 8.40am departure.

The aircraft pulled away from the gate, but the pilot then announced the plane must return, Mr Rahman said.

When it did, the imams were asked to go back to the boarding gate where they were told the pilot was refusing to accept them because some other passengers could be uncomfortable.

Mr Rahman said Delta officials talked with the pilot for more than a half-hour, but he still refused to fly with them aboard.

The men were taken to a lounge and booked on a later flight. They flew on to Charlotte later the same day.

Mr Rahman said a Delta manager apologised for the pilot's actions, but that he and Mr Zaghloul never spoke directly with the pilot.

'Racism': the Council on American-Islamic Relations said it will follow up with the airline and with the TSA to help ensure such incidents do not continue to occur
Both passengers are Memphis-area residents. Mr Rahman, who is also an adjunct instructor of Arabic at the University of Memphis, said he was dressed in traditional Indian clothing.

Mr Zaghloul  was clad in Arab garb, including traditional headgear.

Transportation Security Administration spokesman Jon Allen in Atlanta confirmed the incident but said it was not initiated by that agency.

A Delta Air Lines spokesman said the flight was operated by Atlantic Southeast Airlines, which is also based in Atlanta.

Jarek Beem, a spokesman for Atlantic Southeast, said the airline was investigating the incident. 'We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that this may have caused,' he said.

Mr Rahman and Mr Zaghloul have contacted the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a Muslim civil rights and advocacy group in Washington, D.C.

Ibrahim Hooper, of the American-Islamic organisation, said the group will follow up with the airline and with the TSA to help ensure such incidents do not continue to occur.

exhibit A of why people in this country suck.

why don't we kick off all muslims on flights? hell let's give "them" their own water fountains and bathrooms
since there's nothing healthier than descriminating with a broad brush.

Delta should get their ass handed to them in a lawsuit because this is totally uncalled for

Delta has done this before and has had to pay out $$$. This time, the guys only want an apology. If it were me, I'd make them pay and keep paying until they stop doing crap like this. Granted, it was the pilot and not Delta but it needs to be stopped.

I think the law gives pilots to toss passengers at their own descretion.Go visit that thread about flying being a privilege and not a right.

Morgan may have a point here, Men do commit most violent acts. Perhaps we should kick all of them off of airplanes.

I agree but only if there's an exception for nurses.

Washington: Delta Settles Bias Complaint
Published: June 22, 2004

The government announced a settlement with Delta Air Lines over accusations that it discriminated after the Sept. 11 terror attacks against travelers believed to have been Muslim or of Arab, Middle Eastern or Southeast Asian descent. The Transportation Department said its investigation found that Delta had acted in a manner inconsistent with federal laws barring discrimination. Though Delta acknowledged no wrongdoing, it agreed to provide civil rights training over the next two years to its pilots, flight attendants and passenger service agents. This is the fourth such settlement for airlines stemming from the weeks after the attacks.

If  you insist on dressing like an Islamic extremist in our country you're going to face people in the United States who aren't happy to travel sitting next to you. That happpens when people from your religion savagely chop off heads (DanielPearl, remember that poor guy?), or when members of your religion fly airplanes onto buildings- killing innocent Americans. Next time I'd recommend less sheets and towels and more business attire when traveling to conferences or seminars.

This just in.......the war on terror isn't over. In fact, we may see an escalation in incidents in the USA.

So just after a bunch of Muslims hijacked their planes and flew them into sky scrapers in the name of Allah, killing thousands, Airlines were hyper sensitive of people on their planes they thought were Muslim?  Airline staff might have been a bit over cautious, but considering the circumstances I think it was at least understandable. I don't think is a good example.

Now does this pilot seem like he might have been a bit on the stupid side? Certainly sounds like it to me. I think perhaps both him and the airline need to evaluate his current career path. Not that he should be fired but if he does not want to fly anyone who might wear traditional dress, he needs to look for something else IMO. I am also interested in how the Imans deal with this. It should be used as a teaching/coming together moment not as a tool to beat a drum, file lawsuits etc. The fact that CAIR is already involved does not bode well IMO.

I hope they sue the **** out of Delta and the pilot gets fired. Pure ignorance on his part. No, idiocy is a better word.

Federal laws bar discrimination. That is the most important part of what I posted. A pilot or airline cannot throw anybody off a plane because of skin color, religion, etc. Morgan can't seem to
grasp that. Well, he can't seem to grasp much lately so that's not a surprise
