klink, I'm not going to toy with the notion of an attempt to begin to convince you about anything concerning me or my family.  However, since you really don't know me, you must at least give me the benefit of the doubt, right? 
Maybe if I distance myself from the church and religion and still call myself a follower of the way, would that be okay?  Let's forget I'm a so called pastor, but rather just a man attempting to seek what is right in life.  Let's leave all the Sunday morning services, tithing, baptisms, etc, aside and just talk man to man.  Do you really believe the moral compass of this country is pointing in the right direction...seriously?  Or do you believe we might just be standing on the pinnacle of a society who has been entitled for such a time as to demand it's own way even up to our very own sexuality?  You don't have to be honest with me, just be honest with yourself.
I too am in the process of distancing myself from so called "christians", people who claim to be one thing and then live a totally different life.  There simply is no grey area; you either are or you are not.  Due in part to this, my wife and I have decided it best not to raise our children in the church and continue life in the traditional church.  You don't have to tithe, go to church on Sunday, pray before you eat or sleep to have an authentic relationship with God; surprised?  I have walked out of the systematic programming of what we believe church to be and entered into true ministry; living every day as God would have me to.  not that this is even relevant to our conversation, but to put to rest that I associate with those who believe works or acts can create a geniune relationship...because it cannot.

Need? No. But if they had had lesbian (w/o the GBT) history month when I was in school, I wouldn't have missed a day. Of course back then the only Ls anyone heard about were in porn and Madonna videos

Because if they didn't choose to be that way, then God must have made them that way. And if God made them that way, there are two options:
1. God wants you to treat them the same way you do the rest of his children like the Bible instructs you to do, or
2. God put them on Earth for his believers to persecute.

Number one is unpalatable to the bigoted fundamentalists, and number two makes their god look like a raging a-hole. Therefore, they must endorse the view that it is a choice, and stick with that endorsement beyond all reason.

I have always believed genetics play a part, as well as a stronger belief that the environement plays an even larger role.  However, one has to ask himself if genetics plays a role in the birth of a person who becomes a murderer.  I would say that yes, in many ways like homosexuality, genetics and environmental conditions plays a role in a person becoming a murderer.  Forget that the bible says "thou shalt not murder" and simply understand that society in general believes murder is a bad thing.  Society also believed homosexuality was a bad thing, in many cases becuase the bible says so, but in many cases just because it isn't natural, regardless of whether we liken ourselves to wild animals.  Cats and dogs lick their genitals, but that doesn't still make it proper for any of us to sit around and do so...and I already know this will be protrayed in humor
The point I am stating is that at what point do we stop allowing minorities who feel their choice or preference be imposed upon a society that by and large does not agree?  I understand your rational thought process as to why would a person choose to be gay?  Why would a person choose to be a skinhead?  Or where they genetically or environmentally set up to be a skinhead?  Seriously, why would anyone choose to be a skinhead?  Why would anyone choose to be a pedophile?  Why would anyone choose to be a rapist?  There is absolute truth in that genetics & environmental factors must play a role in someone who chooses to do something unpopular, but it still doesn't make it right, regardless of what a mythical book teaches.

Oddly, you have told us a number of anecdotes of gay people coming up and talking to you about their sexuality. I'm surprised that you don't estimate the percentages to be even higher.
