A player can't get a summer job, because most take summer classes. And while there aren't official practices, there are constant workouts. I know a DT for a D1 schools who's summer schedule included 3 classes, daily workouts, plus community outreach, so no, he couldn't get a job.
Actually, grad students can play football, as long as they haven't used all their eligibilty. And to answer your question, why do normal students need extra cash on top of the thousands worth of living and schooling they receive? Because they want to have a life outside the college campus. They want to afford to be able to go to movies, or take a girl out to dinner. But they can't do that. And at the same time, the university is selling their jerseys in the bookstore for $70 and the players aren't seeing a dime of it. In any other setting, this would be illegal. But because you slap the random term "amateur" on them, they can't make any money while they're in college.
And what about forcing the players to become walking billboards, like they are for Chik-Fil-A in the Boise/Georgia game? Where does that fall under amateurism?
That's not answering my question though. Why is it ok to make these players advertise for organizations, have the schools/conferences make money off of it, but if the players see a dime of the money that, for example, Chik-Fil-A gave Georgia and Boise State to wear their logo, it's against the rules. It's hypocritical at best.

It's hypocritical at best. I get it, you think that players get enough money. I think that with all the hypocrisy in college sports they should see more. I don't like the fact that AJ Green gets suspended for giving a game-worn jersey to a dealer, while Boise State sells game worn jerseys in their bookstore. Meet some players, talk to some of of them, and then tell me honestly you don't think they should see a little more money.
This is the last I'll post on it, because we're just posting the same things over and over. This is the fundamental difference. You believe they already are being paid, via scholarship, housing, etc. (which actually isn't better than any other students, they just usually have upperclassmen housing as a freshman). I just believe they deserve to be paid more. But when it comes down to it, amateurism is bogus, because they're already being paid by the schools...I just think it should be more.
