Wil Myers is an impressive prospect.  Would love to get him for Shields.

There really is no reason not to deal Shields for top of the line prospects.  As that article points out he has logged a ton of innings the past couple of years along with only 2 years left on his deal.  Question is can that Myers come in and be a significant upgrade right away?

Don't know if Myers will be an instant upgrade as all prospects are crap-shoots, but he definitely has all of the tools to be that Evan Longoria-type player.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports has another batch of news items out of the general managers' meetings in Indian Wells, California...

    While the Rays have the pitching depth to move two of their starters, they're likely to move just one of their pitchers.  David Price and James Shields are the biggest trade chips, though most in the industry feel Tampa Bay will keep both aces to make a play for the AL East title in 2013.  There is "no chance" Price is dealt this winter, one rival executive tells Rosenthal, though Price could be moved next offseason.

    The Cubs, Diamondbacks and Rays are bidding for free agent infielder Jeff Keppinger even though he broke his leg, ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports (Twitter links). The 32-year-old recently broke his right fibula, but hopes to be ready for action by mid-January. Clubs don’t consider the injury serious enough to stop pursuing Keppinger.

I think signing Longoria for that long is a bad move.  It never works out.  Especially someone that misses as much time as he does.  He will never be hungry to win and they won't even get the benefit of him playing in a contract year.  What have the Rays said about the payroll this coming year compared to last?

I think that is terrible reasoning.

Longoria has been hurt in the past which is the only concern with this deal. However the fact that this could be the face of Tampa sports for the next decade is worth the risk. Also the discounted price is huge.

Yes, follow the money. He took a 15 from them instead of the 13.3 from the Rays.   The guy is one of the biggest underachievers of all time and has never been a team guy.

The great players don't need incentive to play their best.  What is Jeter's incentive?  What is CC Sabathia's incentive?  What is Mariano Rivera's?  They are all getting paid big bucks and they still perform - because they are great.
