Myers will be making the major league minimum, more or less, for the next three years. Shields will get paid $10.5 million in 2013, and the Royals have an option for him at $12 million in 2014.

Under the new deal, Davis gets $1 million this year, $1.5 million in 2012, $2.8 million in 2013 and $4.8 million in 2014. The Rays hold a $7 million option for 2015 with a $2.5 million buyout.

The trade clears around $13M in 2013 and $16.5M in 2014, and probably $7M in 2015.  The Rays can afford Price.

As I said since shields contract was not guaranteed you can't exactly say they cleared money off their books. They just didn't use it. You're also not taking into account several raises by other players. Longoria, Zobrist, Moore have guaranteed contracts not to mention Price would account for nearly a quarter of their entire payroll. Get a stadium in place then I agree with you. But for now, I don't see it. Their payroll does not increase annually like other teams.

According to CBS Sports' Jon Heyman, the Cubs would eat about $26 million of the $36 million remaining on Alfonso Soriano's contract if they can get a prospect.

The Cubs have been shopping the 36-year-old outfielder all winter, hoping that his productive 2012 campaign will yield a decent return. The Phillies have discussed some trade scenarios, but it doesn't sound like anything is close. Soriano batted .262/.322/.499 with 32 home runs and 108 RBI in 151 games this summer for Chicago.

Here's a guy i would love to add to this line up. He's due $18 million a year this season and next so basically all we would pay is $5 million a year. I say do it. That's about the same amount we've spent on the DH position the last couple of years and Soriano is better than Damon, Burrell, or Scott.

I don't know why the Angels would trade Trumbo at this point.  Morales, however, makes a lot of sense from their perspective.

The Tampa Bay Rays finalized a one-year deal on Tuesday with right-hander Roberto Hernandez for $3.25 million plus incentives.

Hernandez, formally known as Fausto Carmona, will compete for a spot in the rotation during spring training but could end up in the bullpen during the regular season.

"Right now we're confident that he's going to help us get meaningful outs and continue to allow our pitching to be a strength," Rays executive vice president of baseball Andrew Friedman said.

"We're not sure exactly what role we're going to use him in, but obviously he has a lot more experience starting than being used out of the bullpen, so we feel like there is a lot of upside with him, and with his groundball tendencies he'll fit in extremely well with our infield defense and what we're envisioning it to be in 2013."
