I think it's pretty fair to say that Dungy and Kiffin influenced each other, but the basis of the coverage aspects of Tampa- 2 comes from Bud Carson (remember Dungy was a player and coach for the Steelers).

Kiffin was a big user of the 4-3 under front - both at Nebraska and at Minnesota (as was Floyd Peters, his predecessor at the Vikings), which when added to Dungy/Carson's use of the MIKE in coverage basically became the Tampa-2 (Steeler's used a different 4-3 front apparently).

Indeed, BR.

And to illustrate my point about offensive and defensive coordinators: Bill Walsh once said that when it comes to offense, you can design an offense to take advantage of a defense's weaknesses and beat it, but when it comes to defense you simply have to have the right players.

As stated, the "Tampa 2" was a Bud Carson --> Tony Dungy --> Monte Kiffin product. When Tony Came to Tampa, he didn't come and hire a DC and ask that DC what defense he was going to run, he came here to implement Bud Carson's/Tony Dungy's Cover 2 and he hired the right man for the job. You may recall that Kiff was NOT Coach Dungy's first choice as defensive coordinator (though he did play it off publicly).

And as far as Monte Kiffin being touted as the architect of the Tampa 2, well, we know that isn't accurate. What Monte did so very well is game plan and call the defense on Sundays. That's why after Coach Dungy left, Kiff continues to have great success running that defense. In comparison to what's happening in Tampa now, Coach Schiano is here and he's brought his defense with him (as did Coach Dungy) and he's going to have a DC use that defense to game plan and call the defense on game day (as Monte Kiffin did for Tony). The difference is that Monte's collaboration with Floyd Peters was an added tweak to Tony's defense. We don't know if Coach Sheridan has any tweaks yet to offer.

As Bucs fans, let's hope that Coach Sheridan is as good with the game plan and the game day defense as Coach Kiffin was.
