Bucs banking on progress from Foster

After a tough introduction to the NFL during his rookie season, Mason Foster is getting another chance to prove he is the answer at middle linebacker for the Buccaneers.

Foster, a third-round pick in 2011, started all but one game in his rookie season, finishing second on the team in tackles with 83. He was bothered by ankle injuries for much of the season, though, and appeared overwhelmed at times by the mental and physical workload of playing inside. The new Bucs coaching staff has said he often looked tentative and suggested the Raheem Morris regime may have asked Foster to do too much too soon.

The Bucs did not bring in any veteran competition at middle linebacker this offseason — the starting job is Foster’s to lose. They want to see him play faster and with more confidence. Indications are the coaching staff felt Foster showed improvement over the course of OTAs and minicamp.

There is no story here. It's not a news flash that they're hoping he plays better this year.

Don't discount Najee Goode here. I figure one will end up at SLB and the other at MLB...

Gotta give the dude the benifit of the doubt.  With that stinkfest of a coaching staff last year, we don't know if he can ball or not.  We will see soon enough.

\\\\\\\"Java, do you understand this a perfect example of why people beg me to suspend or ban you on a daily basis? Are you actually trying to make a point? Seriously what is the reason for even commenting. In fact why do you even bother coming to the boards? What happened to the intelligent poster from years ago?  A real shame. Like the Bucs yesterday, a wasted effort.\\\\\\\"

I thought Foster played decent given the circumstances. He was a 3rd round pick who was ask to MLB and was thrown into the fire by having to make calls. Add in the whole team played like crap, I thought it was a valiant effort.

My fingers are crossed. I was at the front of the line asking for him to be moved to the outside and a vet brought in to teach him. Then again I am a Raheem Hater so I do lump allot of blame in that direction. I do think Cox will help him out allot.

I remember just two plays from foster last year. The hit on Chad Johnson, and a fumble recovery.

Raheem thought tattoos and dreads automatically made you a mean physical prescence ready to start on day 1 , but apparently it takes more than that...

What is your point? I was wrong? Ok. You win. I was wrong.

Just wondering.. Who else did you want him to start? Adam Hayward? Dom is the one who didn't resign Ruud(who was a decent player despite not being the guy people wanted him to be).

A lot of LBers would have looked bad playing behind our D line last year.  The guys up front have to be more of a force.

. How many 6th round LBs become good starters?  I wouldnt expect much more than depth and STs.

We had a season last year?  Who knew?

And Foster did play valiantly....great word for his effort.  I think his third year or next year would be where he begins to hit his stride....shoulda had a vet compete this year IMHO.

Don't think we need to wait until year 3 to see what we have in him.  LBs for the most part are what they are from early on.  He was thrown onto a bad situation last year so ill give him this year.

Mason will have a good year with a more disciplined DC and time to learn the position. I'm excited about the Bucs this year so much potential it's time for some players to show up.
