Bucs Q&A: Why is Doug Williams not in Ring of Honor?

By TBO.com
Published: October 30, 2012

Q: Why don't the Bucs honor Doug Williams? He is one of reasons the Bucs started winning. In the five years he was he was with the Bucs, they were in the playoffs three times, also the Bucs were just 9 points from the Super Bowl. Somebody please tell me WHY?

— Oscar

A: Patience, pal, patience. The Bucs are honoring one worthy player a year right now for their Ring of Honor, and they just honored Paul Gruber, who is equally deserving. Doug Williams' name will eventually be in the Ring of Honor, but I'm sure there are plenty of fans who believe Derrick Brooks, Mike Alstott, Warren Sapp and John Lynch deserve to go their first.

You can add Coach Dungy and Coach Gruden to that list as well.

He should have gotten the honor before Giles and Gruber.

Why is Hugh Culverhouse not in the Ring of Honor ?

What is your point? I was wrong? Ok. You win. I was wrong.

Because he only played in Tampa for 5 seasons and of those 5 seasons, only 2 can be considered good.

FRG is the most logical poster on this board.  You guys just don\'t like where the logical conclusions take you.

Playoffs in 79, 81, 82.

While Williams was with the Buccaneers, he was paid $120,000 a year—far and away the lowest salary for a starting quarterback in the league, and behind 12 backups. Culverhouse screwed him.  DIdn't offer him anywhere near the going rate when we was due to re-sign. As soon as DW left, the Bucs sucked for what seemed like eternity. The next year the Bucs went 2-14, and they would not make the playoffs again for 14 years until after the 1997 season. The guy was the face of the team while he was w/ the Bucs.

\\\\\\\"Java, do you understand this a perfect example of why people beg me to suspend or ban you on a daily basis? Are you actually trying to make a point? Seriously what is the reason for even commenting. In fact why do you even bother coming to the boards? What happened to the intelligent poster from years ago?  A real shame. Like the Bucs yesterday, a wasted effort.\\\\\\\"

Doug Williams was an average QB, people - not Joe Montana.

Washington can put him in their Ring Of Honor.

Illuminator is a good poster. He sticks to his guns and makes good points. Some don\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'t like that.

I don't know about before Gruber, but definitely before Giles.

Well he has made the playoffs the most time out of all the Bucs QBs.

Doug Williams 3
Trent Dilfer 1.5
Shaun King 1.5
Brad Johnson 2
Chris Simms 1
Jeff Garcia 1

3 trips to the playoffs is a reason for ring of honor?  id rather have a ROH for guys that committed themselves to the Bucs, rather than a flash in the pan.
