Should the Bucs sign QB Josh Freeman to long-term extension now?

On second thought, Freeman is only 24. He may not have caught on yet. Coddle away.

I think if he was concerned about Flacco's feelings, he'd have signed him when he first started griping about his contract....prior to last season, IIRC. Fact is he'll sign him when he feels Flacco is worthy of doing so and wasn't gonna let the contract yr nonsense sway him into doing it sooner than he needs to.

I agree.  He is going to get more than his WR who just signed a 5 year/ 55 million dollar deal.

Mark Sanchez: 5 years $58.25million
Joe Flacco's Deal (This contract will be key to Freeman's negotiations)
Phillip Rivers: 7 years $98.25million
Jay Cutler: 5 years $49.77million
Ryan Fitzpatrick: 7 years $62.195million
Kevin Kolb: 6 years $63.5 million

Those are some of the contracts they will probably use as a negotiating basis.

Obviously a little less than Phillip Rivers.

So I'd say somewhere in $10.5million-$11.5million range

I agree with ya.

I also think it could creep up into the $13mil-$14mil range if Freeman was allowed to hit the open market. That would infuriate me if we didn't get any compensation for the guy.

I agree. If he has a decent year next season, he will ask for more that what his final year is on his contract, which maxes out at  $9.76 mil.

There is no reason financially to resign him early. The risk that we might be signing just an average QB, outweighs the risk that he would get his feelings hurt.
