Freeman's QB passer rating in the second half was 109.1.  There's no reason not to try for a first down there.  The run was just a give up play.

Agreed ...and the way V-jax was feeling it you could throw it his way and chances are he was coming down with it regardless of coverage.

He sucked for sure, but a quick slant to VJ is a fairly safe pass play that has a good chance of picking up the first.  If it doesn't, then you kick it away at that point.  Or get it out the Martin is space and see if he can make something happen.

The problem isn't that it was a failed call.  The problem is that it was very clearly destined for failure and shouldn't have been called.  Everyone knows we were going to run it, you knew Schiano was never going to throw it.  THere was absolutely zero chance of that play achieving anything other than a time out.  It was a QUIT.  The didn't even TRY to get the first.  I've heard of teams being in "four down territory" before, but apparently Rutgers felt we were in "TWO down territory".  Because that's all he ran on that drive.  Might as well have taken a knee instead of the run.  Same odds of getting a first, but at least there wouldn't be a risk of injury because we weren't playing a Schiano coached team.
