There's a new ESPN mock draft out, and they have the Buccaneers taking a pass rusher.



This is some awesome timing. Just as I write a story about Da'Quan Bowers and an improving Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass rush, ESPN comes out with a new mock draft, giving the Bucs a pass rusher. Specifically, the Bucs will draft LSU defensive end Sam Montgomery with the 14th overall pick. Here's what Todd McShay said about the pick:


There is not a corner after Milliner worth taking here to fill a pressing need. There is talk about Joeckel's teammate Jake Matthews* as a first-rounder, and Matthews could fill the Bucs' need at right tackle. However, Montgomery is a solid all-around prospect who can hold up against the run and is a powerful pass-rusher.
 
On the surface, this pick makes some sense. The Bucs have not had a great pass rush this season, and finding good defensive lineman can be very difficult. But if we look at the Bucs' current roster and their needs, it's not all that sensible. The Bucs already have a lot of talent at defensive end, and in fact have three starting quality defensive ends on the roster: Michael Bennett, Adrian Clayborn and Da'Quan Bowers. Unless the Bucs decide to let Bennett walk, which would be very stupid indeed, they have a surplus at defensive end and certainly not a need.

Moreover, Montgomery's quality lies in being a run-stopper, a hard worker, and a defensive end who plays with power. So basically, he's a lighter version of Michael Bennett at 245 lbs. If the Bucs need anything at defensive end, it's a pass rush specialist, not a run stopper who's okay as a rusher.

Also, something that annoys me: the Bucs don't have a need at right tackle. They could use a backup right tackle, but Demar Dotson really has been very good in his first year as a starter. Using a first-round pick on a right tackle would be a waste of a pick.

The Bucs have on massive, glaring hole on their team at cornerback. Unless they manage to fill that hole in free agency, I would be absolutely flabbergasted if they don't use their first-round pick on a cornerback.

If we end up in the 12-14 range, I really think a trade down is the best option.  Trade back to the early to mid 20's, and take Xavier Rhodes and hopefully pick up an extra 3rd round pick.  In the 2nd round take Logan Ryan (if he comes out).  Then we still have 2 #3's and 2 #4's to spend on a FS, DE, OT, SLB.  Ideally it would look like this:
1: X. Rhodes CB FSU
2: L. Ryan CB Rutgers
3: John Simon DE Ohio St. - Another high character, team leader type guy.  Fits the Schiano mold
3: Justin Pugh LT Syracuse - Good developmental prospect to groom behind Penn.  Hard worker, team leader, and Schiano is familiar with him from time in Big East
4: Jamie Collins OLB Southern Miss - 6'3" 240 lb with good speed who is constantly in opponents backfield. 10 sacks, 20 TFL as a senior. Stock may shoot up after Senior Bowl and combine
4: Lamarcus Joyner S FSU - Only 5'8", but I'm sure the Seminole fans on the board will agree that he's a playmaker.  At the very least, he'll provide good depth and be a stand out on ST.

With Bowers backing up clayborn and Bennett, I really think it would be a tad bit overkill. Especially if you consider how bad the DB's got burned this season.

Milliner is obtainable, if Dom just goes and gets him. He worked wonders with a 4th round pick before, and has shown he's willing to fixate on one particular player before draft even starts. I wouldn't put it past him.

There is a possibility that KC, Phins, Egals, panthers, Cards or Lions could go after him though, or maybe be trading partners. It will be awhile before draft, so a lot can change.

If we did take a DE, which I'm not opposed to if Bennett leaves, I'd rather take Ezekial Ansah.  He doesn't have the college production, but he's a freak who needed help putting on pads just a couple of years ago.  Think JPP, but bigger, stronger, and quite possibly faster.

Milliner is extremely overrated.

I would much rather us stay put and reach for a guy like Rhodes, Amerson, or Poyer.

+1. We can get a CB in the 2nd round who will play at the same level of any CB that will be drafted in the 1st round.

I have been impressed with Bowers lately.  I think if you resign Bennett, you look to bring in a pass rush specialist later in the draft or through free agency/trade.

I think our first round pick has to be used on a starting caliber secondary player.  There is just no way anyone currently on the roster is more than a #2, and most are #4-not roster worthy.

I almost think we have to "double up" as in 1st and 2nd round.  Reality is, we have guys playing competitive but we need more NFL starting caliber players back there especially considering Ronde isn't a lock to come back.

What they did in previous drafts was irrelevant. They looked at the roster they had and selected a DE with their 1st round pick. It's delusional to think that they wouldn't have taken JPP had the spent a 1st on Tuck instead of a 3rd, or a 1st on Osi instead of a 2nd.

Oops forgot about Kiwanuka.

But my point wasn't that you should look at the Giants and say "Gee, they have a bunch of good defensive ends. We should keep using 1st round picks on defensive ends." My thought is the lesson from the Giants is they find some really good defensive linemen in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, so you should copy how they do it, not just attempt to copy the finished results. When it comes to 1st round picks, the Giants use a lot of them on defensive backs.
