Bennett talks about pending free agency

Defensive end Michael Bennett has had a breakout season for the Buccaneers, leading the team with nine sacks, which should net him a sizable payday this spring when he hits unrestricted free agency for the first time.

The Bucs value Bennett, who has blossomed since getting claimed off waivers in 2009 and become one of their more consistent defensive players the past two years, his first two as a regular starter. Tampa Bay gave him the highest tender ($2.7 million) as a restricted free agent this past offseason.

Bennett, 27, appreciates the opportunity the Bucs have given him, and is open to returning. But Bennett, who entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M, will let the situation play itself out.

"I love the Buccaneers," Bennett said. "But it's a business. You've got to do what's best for your family."

I read that as "no discount"

He is all but gone in my opinion.

Bucs will go into 2013 starting Da'quan Bowers and Adrian Clayborn.

I think he's overrated anyway.

If he says "no discount," tell him, "no thanks."

Naismith was right about Revis. Everyone else is a dummy.

He's the best player on the current defense.

I don't know if that is saying much.

I'm all for stock piling DEs (Justin Tuck, Osi, Mathias Kiwanuka, JPP)

But I'm not sure if this management is

I wonder how much he would get on the market.  Hard to lose guys like this.

More than he is worth.

You need to drastically overpay to acquire/retain even marginal talent on the open market (see Quincy Black)

Should have signed him to a long term contract 2 years ago. Now we either have to pay a tonne of money or let him go.

The grass could be greener for him on the other side. He could potentially get a little more money than the Bucs are willing to pay, he could go to a team with a better secondary, and he could go to a team that could do a better job of keeping the defense off the field by sustaining long drives.

Until preseason, you stay classy Red Board.

I think we lose Bennet, or Dom overpays for him and this board will turn him into the next Quincy/Clayton after the first game he doesn't get a sack.
