FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets' three-quarterback circus turned surreal Thursday morning, when Rex Ryan announced that Greg McElroy was being evaluated for a possible concussion and won't play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills in the season finale.

Bypassing Tim Tebow for the second time in as many weeks, Ryan said Mark Sanchez will start the game -- yet another blow to Tebow, who has complained openly about his lack of opportunities this season.

"Obviously, Tim isn't happy with it, as you'd expect," Ryan said.

McElroy suffered a possible concussion in Sunday's loss to the San Diego Chargers, who sacked him 11 times. The former third-stringer, coming off his first NFL start, did not disclose any concussion-related symptoms, according to Ryan.

On Thursday morning, McElroy developed a severe headache while lifting weights. McElroy, wearing a towel around his head, told trainer John Mellody of the symptoms. Together, they walked into Ryan's office around 9:30 to break the news.

"He wasn't exactly truthful with our training staff," Ryan said.

As of 11:30 a.m., McElroy still hadn't been diagnosed with a concussion, according to Ryan. Asked why he'd rule out McElroy before a diagnosis, Ryan said, "There's no way I'm going to play him" because of the health risk.

Ryan said he chose Sanchez over Tebow because of Sanchez's past success against the Bills. He threw three touchdowns against them in a 48-28 win in Week 1.

Sanchez was benched two weeks ago after throwing four interceptions in a loss at the Tennessee Titans. At that point, Ryan fueled the quarterback controversy by picking McElroy over Tebow, who had a heated discussion with the coach and expressed his displeasure

The Jags will take any circus they can. And Tebow being back in FL will put butts in seats. Though I'm not sure he would legitimately win a "Battle of who is the least terrible QB" down there.

They've been in 2 of the last 3 AFC Championship games, that trumps not playing a media darling/cult icon.

The Rams haven't had a winning season in NINE years, wouldn't that be worse?
The Lions have 1 winning season in 14 years and even went winless within the past half decade, wouldn't that be worse?

I think Norv Turner should go down as worst coach. Ryan has a big mouth but he is a good coach although I'm not sure why the organization picked up Tibow. Its not like they needed him to sell tickets.

Wasn't the story that Woody Johnson wanted him but Ryan wanted no part of it, Woody got his wy but Ryan refses to use him.
It's kinda like the whole Jeff Fisher/Vince Young thing in Tennessee.

With Tim Tebow, yes, they are the worst organization in the NFL. When they dump Sanchez and Tebow next year and find a quality starting QB, they could be in the playoff hunt.

I don't think the Jets are the worst organization.   And I respect that Ryan has been loyal to Sanchez.   The only reason he played McElroy over Tebow was because he knew McElroy could not be better than Sanchez and that he could go back to his boy Sanchez after a couple of McElroy starts to appease the fans.   Had he started Tebow, Tebow would have won those games and Ryan's boy Sanchez would have been history.    Unfortunate for Jets fans that Ryan is such a loyal guy who is sticking by his first ever first round draft pick.
