Greg Schiano Unloads On His Defense

Today is the Bucs last full practice of the season. Tomorrow the Bucs may have a walk-through and then it’s time to play the Dixie Chicks.

But just because it is the final real practice of 2012 doesn’t mean Bucs coach Greg Schiano is going soft on the Pewter Pirates. In fact, per many Twitter reports, Schiano unloaded on his defense for lacking attention to detail this morning.

Joe’s guessing that a pass defense drill was what set off Schiano.

Joe likes this for several reasons. One is that Schiano is clearly ashamed and embarrassed that his pass defense in his first season in the NFL is dead last and perhaps NFL-worst as in 93 years worst. Joe’s glad to see this irritates Schiano as much as it does Joe.

Schiano, from start to finish, has not tolerated half-@ss performance from his players. Joe vividly remembers Schiano’s first practice in the first rookie minicamp where, in the first couple of minutes of practice, lashed out at the rookies for “half-@ssing it.”

Those are the only two that deserve a shot next year. Scheme needs adjustment as well.

How great would it be if the Falcons took it easy on us as they head into the playoffs and Cam Newton just sheds the Saints.
There is a chance, however slim that they could take that yardage record from us.
121 yards difference
They've allowed 2 more TDS
Both squads allow an 8.1 YPA average
They allow a higher QB rating.
Our squad still sucks but that could take a little of the sting off of how bad they are, personally looking at the numbers I'd say the Saints have the worse pass D, the only reason we've allowed more yards is down to attempts, maybe if our rush D was 4th worst in the league like them those attempts would have dropped a fair bit.

Has Joe had the cajones to call out a guy who isn't a rookie or a young player and is, in fact, a fairly well known vet for some lazy play this season?

Rarely do I hit the site but maybe I can be pointed to a line or two about said player.....heresy tho' it may be to do so.

what do you want him to say? "its ok guys, shucks maybe we'll do better next time" ? he should be getting on players for terrible play. this is much a do about nothing. if you dont think coaches dont cuss players out when they make idiotic mistakes all year long you dont know football. im perfectly fine with schiano reaming players out for poor play. you get paid to play this game and are expected to perform at a certain level. if you repeatedly fail you will face the consequences. f-words first, firings soon after if you still cant get it right

Don't forget that the #2 team on the list was the 13-3 Patriots of 2011 who played in the Super Bowl.
#3 was the 9-7 Falcons (1995) who made the playoffs
#5 was the 10-6 Jets (1986) that won a playoff game that season.
#6 was the 10-6 Chargers (1981) that made it to the AFC Championship game
So of the 6 worst pass Ds in history (entering this season) 5 of them had winning seasons and made the playoffs.

Hell this years Redskins (along with us and the Saints) are set to be in the top/bottom 5 ever and they are likely headed to the postseason.
It kinda throws a wrench in the idea that pass D is what has kept us from winning.

These type of records mean nothing now when you consider....
5 teams pass Ds from the past 2 seasons are among the very worst ever
You had 3 QBs going over 5000 yards last year (Rodgers would have made 4 if he had played week 17) and we could have 2 this year, that had only ever been done twice in history.
A wideout is aiming at 2000 yards which has never even been thought about before.
Something tells me that while our pass D is bad (nobody wants to be last placed) it's not as bad a situation as many claim, it's just the way the league is going.
Even the rushing record is under threat this season too, Goodell has virtually killed defense in the league (and is looking at ways to finish the job off) so these records are going to fall again and again, once legendary statistical marks will become common things.
