North Carolina Tar Heels Still Preventing Butch Davis From Accepting Another Coaching Job?

December 28, 2012   ·

By Rob Kelley

Call it payback. Call it sour grapes. Call it karma. Call it whatever you want. The North Carolina Tar Heels are doing everything possible to prevent Butch Davis from accepting another coaching job with any other team. It happened last season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It is now happening with the Florida International Golden Panthers.
According to Alex Marvez of Fox Sports, UNC feels as f they have a reason to keep Davis from signing on as the new head coach at FIU, and they are standing firm with their decision.
“The dispute centers on almost $1.8 million that Davis is owed from the settlement he signed upon his dismissal as UNC’s head coach in July 2011,” according to Marvez. “The source said that UNC doesn’t want to pay the money if Davis accepts another coaching position, which is a stumbling block that also complicated his hiring earlier this year by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.”
Marvez also reported that FIU is hoping to still sign Davis to a contract that will pay him around $500K per season.
The Tampa Bay Times reported that Davis is due annual payments of $590,000 from UNC every Jan. 15 between 2013 and 2015 as part of the severance deal the two sides agreed to upon his dismissal as head coach at Chapel Hill. Davis was fired after a plethora of NCAA infractions were committed during his four seasons with the Tar Heels, spanning from 2007-2010. The rules violations led to the tar Heels being bowl ineligible during this past season, despite the fact that they finished with a winning record.
Davis has done well with nearly every team or program that he has led, although the success has not come without controversy. If UNC does allow Davis to take over as head coach at FIU, they may want to go through every thing he does with a fine toothed comb.

For a guy that supposedly did nothing wrong,  UNC sure has a case of the azz against him.

\\\\\\\"Java, do you understand this a perfect example of why people beg me to suspend or ban you on a daily basis? Are you actually trying to make a point? Seriously what is the reason for even commenting. In fact why do you even bother coming to the boards? What happened to the intelligent poster from years ago?  A real shame. Like the Bucs yesterday, a wasted effort.\\\\\\\"
