Draft season, and that means we have two more mock draft for you to choose from today.


 


Today's mock draft is a dual mock draft, coming to us from CBS Sports. Rob Rang and Dane Brugler both turned in an interesting mock draft for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rob Rang has them taking Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner off the board as the first cornerback taken in the draft:
 

Though more than just the cornerbacks are at fault for Tampa ranking dead last in the NFL in passing yards allowed in 2012, there is no better spot to start to correct the problems. One of the trademarks of Greg Schiano's Rutgers' teams was stellar play at cornerback and the 6-1, 198-pound Milliner has the length and physicality to fit perfectly.
 

Alabama defensive players: everyone likes them, and Greg Schiano probably a little more so. They're always physical, they can all tackle, and they're all engaged in the running game. And now, Milliner can cover, too. He's everything the Buccaneers are looking for in a cornerback, and he would fit perfectly.

Milliner falls this far because of an early run on quarterbacks and pass rushers. And, let's be honest here: those runs happen every.single.year. Even though this looks like a pretty mediocre quarterback class, people are going to pick quarterbacks high. And this does look like a good pass-rushing class. So Milliner, easily the top cornerback, falls to the Bucs.





Dane Brugler goes the other way, coming up with defensive end Barkevious Mingo:


Despite drafting several defensive ends recently, the Buccaneers ranked 30th in the league in sacks this past season (25.0 sacks). Mingo didn't have junior season most expected, but he's an athletic edge rusher who has a bright future with his combination of speed and burst.
 

That's one selection I really can't see happening. It's not because they couldn't use a pass-rush specialist: everyone can use a good pass-rush specialist at all times. It's because Mingo doesn't fit the Bucs. He's inconsistent versus the run, undersized for a defensive end and has had a disappointing senior season with just four sacks. He's a bit of a one-trick pony, trying to beat tackles with speed and nothing else. In fact, really, he reminds me of Gaines Adams. Talented, but he has a lot of work to do.

I would prefer the Buccaneers to select Oregon's Dion Jordan, if they're going for a pass rusher. Jordan's explosive, more well-rounded in his technique and actually has the versatility to drop into coverage and do it well. He was a 3-4 OLB at Oregon, but he has the frame to play 4-3 defensive end. He could be an intriguing weapon for whoever drafts him.
 
Though, honestly, I don't think defensive line is a need -- if the team resigns Michael Bennett.

I'm willing to bet there were more tds/long 3rd down passes than even realistic chances to hit the QB. When they needed a 3rd down, they got it (from lyron, gorrer, or biggers especially).

Truth be told, we don't know what we have for a DL anyway. They're never healthy at the same time. And we flat out know that, even IF 100% healthy, this DB core sucks. It was only slightly below average when talib and/or wright were in, so that lets us all know where we stand. If dom is to fix this and quickly, he must draft a CB and bring in a FA (jammer, cro, or grimes). Now, he can go either way and draft one in the second instead, then wrap up another good FA signing, but by the time he does that (in the second) even though there are quite a few solid cb's, the value of the second might fall so badly they have to draft another position instead (such as LB or DT).

As far as I'm concerned, dom needs to go get milliner, then go spend some money on one of the aformentioned free agent cbs. IF he has to deviate from that for any reason, his next target should be Te'o.

Agreed.

Te'o is possibly of the urlacher/Lewis/brooks ilk. One of those very rare guys at his positio that will probably be around awhile.

Milliner isn't quite as "special," but he sure would do a lot to help this team defense in a position of great need.

As long as the CB position is addressed, I'm good.

Trouble with this is, grimes, cro, and jammer are "good" not "great." The draft picks however, milliner or banks, have the possibility of being elite at the NFL level.

Either way though, I don't think in either scenareo the bucs lose. As long as they do something, the CB core will improve.

I agree Te'o will be an outstanding pick, but where would we play him? Unless we are going to change over to a 3-4 defense, Te'o doesn't offer enough value to draft in the 1st round. If you moved him into the middle and bumped Foster outside you would be essentially wasting Foster in what is basically a two down position in our current defensive scheme.

If Te'o is available, I would hope that someone would be willing to trade up for him, but I honestly don't see the Bucs picking him. I would love to have Milliner, but if he's not there and I have to pick, I'm liking Taylor Lewan OT in that position to take over the RT from Dotson or even the LT position from Penn. Let Penn/Dotson battle for the RT position. Both our offensive tackles are below average in my opinion and Lewan is a beast.

Not a Milliner fan?   A lot depends on free agent moves, and whether or not Bennett stays.

I think Mingo has a better chance to be a high impact player than Milliner.

I think Mingo is a much better value.

Dee Milliner is not going to be a very good NFL player. He is not good value at #13 and will not be a #1 corner in the NFL. This class blows as far as corners go, and just because we have a huge glaring need at the position doesn't mean you take the guy. He looks like a solid nickel corner on film to me...and that is damn sure not what I'm looking for with my top 13 draft pick. His stock is this high only because he's being billed as the top corner on Bama's powerhouse defense. Keep in mind also that the last two Bama corners that were drafted highly (and were both better than Milliner) have not been very good to say the least. Kareem Jackson was absolutely awful til the past year where he became decent, and Dre Kirkpatrick was so bad this year that he barely got any snaps. Go for Grimes and Sean Smith in free agency, and draft Logan Ryan or David Amerson in the 2nd round.

Love the free agency part.  They may tag Smith though, hope not.
