NFL teams, including Bucs, scouting players for East-West Shrine
Representatives from NFL teams around the league, including the Bucs, will descend on St. Petersburg this week to scout the next generation of NFL players. The annual East-West Shrine all-star game will be played Saturday at Tropicana Field, and the practices over the next several days offer unique opportunities for talent evaluators to see players in a variety of NFL-like drills and game situations. So, when workouts get underway today, we figured we’d show you a handful of players who might appeal to Bucs fans. Here they are:
William Campbell, defensive tackle, Michigan A 6-5, 308-pounder, Campbell had a career-high 10 tackles last season against Northwestern. Had 44 total tackles in 2012 and appeared in 50 consecutive games.
Joseph Fauria, tight end, UCLA One of the top tight ends in the country, Fauria is seen as an athletic receiver in the mold of Jimmy Graham and the like (though not nearly as polished). At 6-7 and 255 pounds, he is a big target in the passing game and represents exactly the sort of player NFL teams are gravitating toward at tight end.
Terry Hawthorne, cornerback, Illinois Here’s an interesting athletic prospect who not only played cornerback but who also was a major contributor in the return game and has some ability to play receiver. Mostly, NFL teams will want to assess his ability to cover. He’ll also showcase his speed, as he projects to run in the 4.4-second range in pre-draft 40-yard dash testing.
Josh Johnson, cornerback, Purdue A former Pasco High star, Johnson has adequate size (5-11, 195 pounds) and shows a willingness to be physical with receivers. He has good enough speed to recover when necessary. Quite telling are his 65 tackles (59 solo) this season, third on the Purdue roster.
Nigel Malone, cornerback, Kansas State Had a combined 12 interceptions in his final two seasons with the Wildcats. He is considered to be a physical player despite his size (5-10, 185 pounds). Depending on his performance this week and in testing, he could push his way into the middle rounds.
