CFL player Armond Armstead generating interest from NFL teams

 January 15, 2013

By Eric Schmidt

NFL teams are always looking to add talent to their rosters in non-conventional ways. Under **CENSORED** Vermeil, the Philadelphia Eagles held open tryouts. Recently, NFL teams have had their eyes focused north of the border to the Canadian Football League (CFL). Cameron Wake and Colts LB Jerrell Freeman are recent examples of CFL players that have found success in the NFL. This year, teams are taking a look at DT Armond Armstead.

Armstead played his college ball at USC but went undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft. Teams took a pass on Armstead after he sat out the 2011 season due to medical reasons. He suffered a heart attack prior to the 2011 season. Despite generating little interest from the NFL last year, after a season with the Toronto Argonauts, teams are buzzing about him.

The 6 foot 5 inch defensive tackle helped the Argonauts win the CFLs Grey Cup this season and recorded six sacks. Toronto released Armstead so that he could pursue employment in the NFL.

ESPNs Adam Schefter reports that Armstead has worked out for the New England Patriots, Indianapolis Colts and the Philadelphia Eagles this week.

I find it funny that teams passed on a guy because of a heart attack. If that's not the cover-up feel-good story covering for his lack of skills that is.

Players pass physicals all the time with something legitimately wrong with them. Gaines had an irregular sized heart (if im not mistaken) that no one knew about until it happened. Heck, this guy here could probably go the rest of his life, never having another. It's not like the guy was that much of a risk at the six-seventh round. Big guys having heart attacks isn't exactly a new concept either. Besides that, it said he sat out an entire season. That's more than enough time for teams to assess if the guy could still go.

Glad he's getting a shot though, and hopefully he never has another attack. Good for him.

Naismith was right about Revis. Everyone else is a dummy.
