Five Super Bowl Winning Coaches Who Didn't Deserve Their Win

Some achieve greatness, others have it thrust upon them.

This saying is particularly true when it comes to certain Super Bowl-winning head coaches.

There have been many coaching greats of the game, Vince Lombardi, Don Shula, Bill Walsh, Bill Belichick to name a few.

There have been some that have had a bit of luck fall their way and perhaps should not be mentioned on the same page as the list above. Of course the list is a short one with only 27 coaches having won the big game.

So with that in mind, who are the five least deserving Super Bowl-winning coaches of all time?










George Seifert - Super Bowl XXIV

Coach Seifert lucked out when Bill Walsh stepped away from the San Francisco 49ers' sideline.

The Niners had just won a thrilling Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Seifert inherits a talented roster that even most average coaches would have taken into the Super Bowl the following year.

San Francisco was on automatic all season and really didn't need any guidance such was their dominance.

The Blunder Bowl, or Stupor Bowl.

Call it what you will but the manner of the game was hardly that of a well-drilled and disciplined team.

The Colts turned the ball over seven times. If it wasn't for the fact that they had just about enough quarterback savvy from Johnny Unitas and Earl Morrall, saw them through the game.

If the Colts were bad on this day, the Cowboys were worse, committing penalties and turnovers at critical times.

To be fair, no one deserved to win this one.

The Baltimore Colts beat the Dallas Cowboys in the fifth Super Bowl by the slender margin of 16-13.

The Indianapolis Colts overcame an opening kickoff return for a touchdown, to go on and win the game in a battle where they managed to just about beat Rex Grossman's Chicago Bears.

Peyton Manning calls the plays here right? That's what he does best. Changing the play as he sees fit at the line of scrimmage.

So what did Dungy do to help win this game? OK, so he helped orchestrate a mean defense, but as stated above he couldn't get rid of the pesky Rex.

He's in the Hall of Fame for a reason right?

Well yes, of course his career was long and rich in success but hen it comes to winning the big one, he isn't the name that comes to everyone's mind.

Think the New York Jets, and you think of Joe Namath and his infamous guarantee. That coupled with some dodgy refereeing calls.

The Jets' most famous win wasn't down to this coaching mind, but the true psychology of another.





Barry Switzer - Super Bowl XXX

Jimmy Johnson walked away from the Dallas Cowboys after back-to-back Super Bowl wins. Had he stayed who knows how many they would have won.

Enter the circus that was Barry Switzer. Always good for a soundbite.

He took the Cowboys close the following year, losing out in the NFC Championship game. Only to bounce back the following year and gain his place in Head Coaching history,

Trouble is he did it all with Jimmy's team. Like Seifert before him with the 49ers, a fool could have won with these Cowboys...oh hang on...

It's a shame Dungy went to coach the Colts.    Had they stuck with Mora, they'd have won multiple Super Bowls with Peyton Manning.

As much as I hate the Dungy myth it's not fair to say he won because he had Manning.
Afterall what is Mannings playoff record, he may be the greatest regular season QB ever but in the playoffs he's average at best.
Just look at the playoff numbers from that Super Bowl year...
3 TDs 7INTs and he didn't have 1 game with a QB rating of 82 or more BUT he did have one under 40.
The Colts D held 3 of the 4 teams they faced to 31 points combined.
Manning lucked into a Super Bowl because Dungys defense finally stepped up and stopped someone while also getting 13 turnovers in those 4 games.

When you consider he came to a team that had been to the playoffs 3 years in a row, had what has been voted upon as a top 10 defense of all time, then he plays his own offense in the superbowl. Has to be one of the easiest rings a coach has ever earned.
