Sad news. Those of us who were fans before the SB season will remember him....RIP John Holt.

TAMPA --

John Holt, a five-year starter at cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the early 1980s, has died at the age of 53

The News and Eagle of Enid, Okla., where Holt starred as a high school football player, reported Holt died Feb. 13 in Tampa after an illness.

Holt was selected by the Bucs in the fourth round of the 1981 draft out of West Texas State and played five years in Tampa, posting 53 starts. As a rookie, he averaged 24.9 yards on kickoff returns and 11.1 yards returning punts as the Bucs advanced to the NFC playoffs.

"John was a quiet guy who did his job and did it very well,'' said former Bucs quarterback Doug Williams, a teammate in Holt's first two NFL seasons. "I can see him now, No. 21 ... good corner, good special teams guy. He was never looking for pub, but John Holt was a pretty good football player.''

Holt joined the Colts in 1986 and played his final three seasons with Indianapolis, finishing with seven career interceptions and nine fumble recoveries.

Holt is survived by his wife of 30 years, Janet Neiden Holt, of Tampa, as well as his mother, two brothers and four sisters.

A memorial is scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday at Florida Mortuary, 4601 N. Nebraska Ave. Donations in Holt's memory may be made to LifePath Ho**CENSORED**e.
