If the Republican angle is that the sequester is a bad thing, and it's the president's fault, because it was his idea, that kind of overlooks a vital aspect of what the definition of a "deal" is, which is an agreement between two sides for mutual benefit.

Prevent?  Not particularly.  Talk him out of espousing a viewpoint that Sperling didn't hold to be particularly accurate?  Sure.  The important thing is that there's no hint of threat, coercion, intimidation, force, whatever YOU want to call it it the text of that email.  There's nothing salacious about it, and interpreting it otherwise requires some fairly egregious out-of-context paraphrasing.
