The NFL free agency period begins at 4 p.m. on March 12. That means the Buccaneers and 31 other teams have only a few precious days left to decide which of their own free agents to bring back and who to pursue - and how much money to spend - when players hit the open market.
 
The Bucs are about $33 million dollars under the 2013 salary cap of $123 million.
 
Fifth-year general manager Mark Dominik is in charge of shaping the roster, and there are plenty of needs and variables to consider.
 
Now is your chance. You be the GM.
 


RECEIVER
 
The Bucs hit the jackpot with free agent Vincent Jackson last year, adding not only a Pro Bowl-caliber deep threat, but also one whose exemplary off-field work habits became a model for others to follow.
 
Jackson's presence helped the Bucs get another big season out of No. 2 wideout Mike Williams, but injuries to Arrelious Benn and Sammie Stroughter left the team a little thin at this key position.
 
What the Bucs need more than anything here is a legitimate slot receiver who can take some pressure off the outside threats, or another speedy perimeter threat who will allow Jackson or Williams to work from the slot. The Bucs' preference is to add a reliable slot option, because that would allow Jackson and Williams to remain on the outside where they work best.
 
The Bucs also would like to add some speed, because that would allow them to move Jackson and Williams around a little bit, making it easier to create mismatches against defensive backfields.
 


BUCS UNDER CONTRACT FOR 2013
 
Vincent Jackson: Played in his third Pro Bowl in January. He's about as good as it gets.
 
Mike Williams: Has consistently outplayed his first contract such that the Bucs are already negotiating an extension.
 
Arrelious Benn: Coming off yet another knee injury, he might be on his last legs with the Bucs.
 
Tiquan Underwood: Has the speed the Bucs want, but lacks the consistency they need.
 
David Douglas: A rookie out of Arizona last year, the Bucs think he has upside.
 
Chris Owusu: Has very good speed and could double as a return option.
 


BUCS POTENTIAL FREE AGENTS

Sammie Stroughter: Could be the answer in the slot if he could just stay healthy.
 
Roscoe Parrish: Stepped in and did an adequate job as a returner last year.
 


NFL POTENTIAL FREE AGENTS
 
Mike Wallace, Pittsburgh: Inconsistent pass catcher, but fast enough to create one-on-one opportunities for others.
 
Greg Jennings, Green Bay: Has been a big-play threat and big-time playmaker for several years.
 
Wes Welker, New England: A very good slot option, but his age (32) makes you wonder if the end is near.
 
Danny Amendola, St. Louis: A strong option for the slot, but injury bug always seems to bite him.

Seriously though, they need a pure blocking te. I'm OK with underwood, there could be someone better, but he's alright.

I doubt much attention is paid to this position this offseason. As it should be. Pass Defense overrides any current improvements elsewhere.

     Mike is a good player and one of the best No. 2 but he's not Vincent Jackson, Dwayne Bowe or Marques Colston, if he want more than $7M per year try to sign Mike Wallace or wait 2014 for Percy Harvin

i like that pick also.  i think david nelson fits well because he should come cheap, knows Florida, and fits the big WR mold.

Look at Justin Hunter out of Tennessee in the 3rd or 4th round IMO. He could be the steal of the WR draft this year.

what? Hunter could very well go in the late part of the first to mid second. are you thinking of Darick rogers?

Unless a good prospect falls to us in the 2nd or 3rd, I wouldn't bother with WR. I think that Freeman could really benefit from another veteran WR like Hixon, and he has experience in the system.

Guys like Benn and Stroughter, who have done pretty much nothing could still turn into decent options. They're at the point where you can call them a veteran, and they've been with Freeman a long time. Stroughter will be with Freeman for 5 seasons starting next year. Even though he's been injured a lot, they have practiced together a lot and should know each other well.
