PewterReport.com has learned the Buccaneers have extended starting right tackle Demar Dotson's contract through the 2016 season. Dotson was scheduled to become an unrestricted after the 2013 season.

Just like Dominik said, the team is saving money to take care of their homegrown players. THE PLAN IS WORKING!!!!!

FRG is the most logical poster on this board.  You guys just don\'t like where the logical conclusions take you.

Just cause he got a contract extention doesnt mean he is locked in as a starter. This team deparately needs OL depth. I dont know about you guys but im tired of having undrafted free agents fill in when our starters go down. Time to sign some experience and draft some OL deph in the middle/late rounds of draft. Never know when they will be needed. Kinda important.

No wait. that would mean that Bennett and Miller are still on the Bucs roster then.

A team friendly extension. Dotson was scheduled to earn $1.5 million for 2013. He originally signed a two year extension last off season, instead of a one year tender offer as a restricted free agent, because of playing time incentives his base salary for 2013 was increased by $500,000 thousand dollars bringing his salary up to $2 million. My guess is that the team turned that $1 million dollars they lowered his 2013 salary by in to some time of bonus payable now in exchange for the three year extension with possible incentives if he continues to ascend upward in 2014 and beyond. Just my guess. But I would figure that the total value of the extension is worth more then just $4.5 million in base salary. I bet its more likely in the neighborhood of a 3-year extension worth roughly  $6-$7 million total when you factor in incentives in new money so essentially the team has him signed for four years at about $8 to $9 million with an annual average of about $2-$2.25 million per season. Which is very cheap considering today's NFL economic climate for starting right tackles.

Woo Hoo, Super Bowl bound for sure!!! Oh wait, we have done near nothing to upgrade the defense. No starting caliber players at the corners or at defensive tackle. This team lacks depth at most positions. Buc's are one of the top five teams with cap room yet they won't spend. I hear all the cap hell paranoia, how's about signing some aging vets to one year deals? Lets try and compete this year. Atlanta loses Abraham, they Sign Osi. We lose Bennet and Miller we sign nobody to help replace them. The draft can't and won't plug all the holes we have, we need some help via free agency if we plan to compete this season.

Didn't Demar Dotson give up the 3rd fewest sacks for RTs or something along those lines?

Whats not to like about this signing?

Let's see; Trueblood was a 2nd round pick in the draft, and this UDFA is now playing at a higher level... Draft position means nada; what you do on the field does. If an UDFA plays better, he's EARNED it, so let'em play!

Dotson and Joseph on the right side.  Defensive coordinators are already drawing up schemes. Hopefully Dotson will continue to improve.

Strange thing is the deal doesn't really change anything. He's getting, apparently, the same number he would have without the extension in 2013. The guarantee is for a portion of this year's money and puts the team in no further obligation should he James Lee 2013. In addition, he's not costly enough to preclude drafting a starting caliber OT in the draft.

Doesn't help the cap at all, it appears. Maybe to lock in depth.
