Getting rid of Bowers isn't going to help the problem at Defensive End.  The team screwed up months ago regarding the DE position.  They'll have to sleep in the bed they made.

Agreed. Bowers was always a risky pick and the rumors were many teams took him off their boards entirely after getting a look at the knee. If it works out, then it was a steal and that is what we have all been hoping for.....but right now it looks like our longshot is not going to pay off. Putting all our eggs in one basket with him this season was stupid and now it looks like we'll suffer for it.

Even if he didn't have his knee problem I don't know if he would have turned into a good player. He was viewed as a #1 overall pick because of his strength and his speed, but there's guys who are quicker and stronger. He didn't develop many pass rush moves in college, and he had weak lower body strength. I don't think the knee has been a big issue in his slow development. He played his first season injury free and didn't make much of an impact. He's a bit behind development because of his injury last year, but he should be good to go by now and at least should be better than he was a rookie, which isn't the case at the moment.

The point I'm trying to make is that he's not a disappointment because we shouldn't have expected him to be a starter early on in his career. He's more Margus Hunt than Jadaveon Clowney. I don't know why the Bucs thought they had an immediate starter. He hasn't had time to learn pass rush moves and he hasn't improved on his physical shortcomings - lower body strength. He should be treated like a developmental prospect.

Bowers has value as a situational pass rusher and needed an extra year in a limited role given his lack of playing time.  That is why re-signing Bennett even for a year would have been nice.

Some interesting numbers

For the first 2 preseason games:

Bowers is getting 1 QB hurry for about every 16 snaps played
Bennett is getting 1 QB hurry for about every 34 snaps played

I think they will keep him around as unless he is actually hurting the team with his behavior or his play. Maybe his play is hurting the team and they want to give a guy like Means or Gholson more playing time. Which isn't a bad idea if those guys can get it done with time. I wouldn't be surprised if he is cut or stays.

I think the real problem is that we keep drafting these big run stuffing LDEs instead of elite pass rushers.

You might want to re-check your numbers or else you are intentionally misrepresenting them.

Bennett:  34 snaps, 1 hit, 1 hurry  = 1 disruption per 17 snaps
Bowers:  65 snaps, 4 hurries = 1 disruption per 16.25 snaps

Even those numbers don't tell the whole story, though, because you are looking at total snaps, including run plays.
For just pass rushing snaps:

Bennett:  10 snaps, 1 hit, 1 hurry  = 1 disruption per 5 pass rush snaps
Bowers:  41 snaps, 4 hurries = 1 disruption per 10.25 pass rush snaps

Bennett is disrupting the QB twice as often as Bowers
