This is assuming Houston fires Gary Kubiak and his staff, but Phillips is one of the best defensive coaches of his generation and always gets immediate and sustained results. Yes, we have arguments about switching to the 3-4 every season and every offseason, but as has been stated before, Phillips runs a 1-gap front that would suit the Bucs' personnel much better than Belichick and others' 2-gap principles. As we're kind of seeing, the Bucs only have a few players worth building around in the front 7, anyways, so there wouldn't be too much wasting of resources.

First and foremost, Gerald McCoy would be playing end. Some may argue he doesn't have the physique for that position, but I would counter he compares very favorably to Darnell Dockett who has successfully switched between 4-3 UT and 3-4 DE throughout his career. Akeem Spence would remain at nose tackle, where Phillips has generally relied on lesser prospects. He made Jay Ratliff a star in Dallas after being a 7th round pick, he first brought former Lions washout Sean Cody to Houston, and is now playing mid round pick Earl Mitchell. All are about the same size and athletic ability as Spence. Adrian Clayborn would be the other end, and it may even fit him better because we all know he's not a true edge rusher. He compares pretty close physically to successful 3-4 DEs like Cameron Jordan and Ray McDonald.

At linebacker, everyone knows Lavonte David isn't the biggest of players, but 3-4 teams have been playing 4-3-sized players at inside linebacker for a while. Pittsburgh drafted Lawrence Timmons a while ago, New England drafted Jerod Mayo a while ago, and just last year Dallas was playing Bruce Carter inside. David would be just as good inside as he is now and Phillips blitzes from ILB a lot. In 2008 Bradie James had 8 sacks from that spot. Mason Foster is barely worth discussing as he's JAG, but the less space he has to cover, the better. Neither outside linebacker is on the roster right now, but Phillips has shown he can plug and play without having an absolutely elite prospect. Shaun Phillips was a 4th round pick for the Charges and has been a consistent 7-10 sack per year player. Connor Barwin was a 2nd round pick for Houston who had 11.5 sacks the first year he played under Phillips and then Brooks Reed a 2nd round pick, too, who had 6 sacks his rookie season. It can be done.

Hellz yes.  He might not be a great HC but he is a very good DC. And that hybrid 3-4 he runs would be interesting and doable.

Physically, McCoy is comparable to JJ Watt.  He isn't much of a playmaker as a UT in this scheme so really can't be any worse.

I'd love it. But Houston also loves him and probably won't let him go. He will be the one coach they let stick around if they fire the staff. He may even get a shot at the HC position.

McCoy may be roughly the same size as Watt, but he's not close athletically. The only players comparable to Watt are Julius Peppers and Mario Williams. Those guys are a different breed than everyone else.

That is something to consider and Texas-born coaches like staying in Texas.

I'm nt a fan of the 34, but you  can't argue that Wade builds a good D wherever he goes. Wouldn't want him at HC, but he's a helluva good DC

Yeah, guess you are right.  Watt is superior.  This is what a number 3 pick should look like.

Entertain Wade Phillips?  Of course.  He's proven to be an excellent DC in this league.

He is one of the best Defensive coordinators in the league.  He would be a huge step up compared to what we have.  That goes without saying.

Wade is a player's coach and a pushover and we all know it's impossible for those guys to be successful. Just ask the red board.

I think he gets the HC job there in Houston.

\\\\\\\"Java, do you understand this a perfect example of why people beg me to suspend or ban you on a daily basis? Are you actually trying to make a point? Seriously what is the reason for even commenting. In fact why do you even bother coming to the boards? What happened to the intelligent poster from years ago?  A real shame. Like the Bucs yesterday, a wasted effort.\\\\\\\"
