I lived in NYC and was a young teenager non Jets fan at the time Namath played so I have a pretty good read on him. If he was the QB of the Jets and they won the 1978 Super Bowl in a big upset over the Colts he might not be in the HOF. However he was the QB of the Jets in the first win of an AFL team over an NFL team. If you weren't around at that time, you would have no idea how big that was at the time.

He was also the first big catch by the AFL over the NFL in the draft. Those two issues, measured by what was going on at the time, probably get him in the HOF. He also had some stats you could point to as well.

Happy and Peppy and Bursting with love.

Really, Joe Namath is the among the worst  QB to win a SB.

Well, he did win the MVP award for that Super Bowl.

And if you mean other than that game, he was the first QB to throw for over 4000 yards in a season in NFL history.

Rookie of the year winner  1965

4 time  AFL All Star.

He is in the HOF

Never the top passer any year, led the league in picks three times in his career. He was more New York hype than reality. He shouldn't be in the hall of fame.

The NY hype definitely helped.

What younger folk don't realize is these QBs from years ago never heard of 'dink-and-dunk' or 'check-downs' or 'hurry-up' or 'spread formations', not even much shotgun formations either. They almost always threw the ball downfield, or ran it. Obviously that inflates the heck out of today's QB's numbers...

WR also did not run free back then like they do today.  The game was much more physical.
Refs would call pass interference 10 out of 10 times if today's DBs handled WRs the way the game was played years ago.

All good points, but I was just responding to those who were making him out to be Jamarcus Russell.   And as someone mentioned, he did quite a bit to get that AFL off the ground.

\\\\\\\"Java, do you understand this a perfect example of why people beg me to suspend or ban you on a daily basis? Are you actually trying to make a point? Seriously what is the reason for even commenting. In fact why do you even bother coming to the boards? What happened to the intelligent poster from years ago?  A real shame. Like the Bucs yesterday, a wasted effort.\\\\\\\"

I wanna kiss you right now
