The Charles Godrey/Jon Stewart contracts really jump out at me.  I see them getting rid of some other players before Smith.  And the salary cap bump to $130 really helped them.

                                             contract         avg salary     gnteed $$

Charles Johnson DE 27 6 yr $76,000,000 $12,666,667 $32,000,000 2017
Jordan Gross LT 33 6 yr $56,400,000 $9,400,000 $24,500,000 2014
Ryan Kalil C 28 6 yr $49,116,000 $8,186,000 $19,000,000 2017
DeAngelo Williams RB 30 5 yr $43,000,000 $8,600,000 $21,000,000 2016
Jonathan Stewart RB 26 5 yr $36,500,000 $7,300,000 $11,500,000 2018
Thomas Davis OLB 30 5 yr $36,500,000 $7,300,000 $8,000,000 2016
Steve Smith WR 34 4 yr $30,000,000 $7,500,000 $14,750,000 2017
Charles Godfrey S 28 5 yr $27,500,000 $5,500,000 $12,400,000 2017
Greg Olsen TE 28 5 yr $22,800,000 $4,560,000 $6,200,000 2016
Cam Newton QB 24 4 yr $22,025,498 $5,506,375 $22,025,498 2015
Luke Kuechly ILB 22 4 yr $12,578,602 $3,144,651 $12,578,602 2016
Mike Tolbert FB 28 4 yr $10,000,000 $2,500,000 $4,200,000 2016
Star Lotulelei DT 24 4 yr $9,604,500 $2,401,125 $9,604,500 2017

Gross is a FA. Stewart can't be cut because they'd incur a huge - $16 million I think - cap charge. Lot of bad contracts that they are stuck with (DeAngelo Williams is another). Star and Luke K can't be touched because they are on their rookie deals.

It costs them $2million more to not have him on the roster than to simply keep him and demote him to being a #2.
Either way they need a new #1 so I don't see him moving on, Just another example of those large bonuses coming back to bite the Panthers in the butt.

He is the only WR on that team worth a damn, that would be a silly move.

I agree. Smith is not going to be released/cut this year because then they would have to replace their top 3 receivers from last season and they finished 12-4 with those guys. This is just a throw it out there piece IMO.

He was another Barry Sanders to the Bucs.

Just Herculean.

And to say MW is as bad as Smitty is ridiculous. Snotty has flat out knocked his own teammates out in film rooms and practice fields.

Steve Smith is a punk azz. And violent.

Panthers should do everything in their power to take Sammy Watkins.

Hopefully, Watkins is no longer available after #7.
