i think it's a coachable fix.  we didn't always just magically produce the league's best tacklers, you just couldn't tell when they missed because they covered each other so well.  in this scheme when you can't make him tackle you're supposed to reroute him to where your help is, usually inside towards the safeties.  when your safeties aren't making easy tackles, you get nervous and try to do it yourself wether you can or not.

they've also stopped gang tackling.  that's absolutely not related to age, unless they're experiencing alzheimers and forgot to fly to the ball.  it's just laziness.  look at westbrook's run and you can't tell me that was the defense's age.  it was all mental - laziness and lack technique.

Brooks wasn't the same old Derrick brooks last year either. We discussed his looking slow, and missing some tackles at the beginnning of last season. Then PewterReport came out with a story of some unreported injury to Derrick, and how that may have been the cause to his slow start. Then we never ever heard a follow up story to that rumor. But to answer your question, Derrick did start to show signs last season.

With no pressure inside the D is getting spread out too much to assist each other reliably.  We used to be all about gang tackling, now we're a one-at-a-time tackling team.  That's not to say there hasn't been poor individual tackling, but there are more things that are going into it and making the problem worse, creating a snowball effect...Some poor technique, lack of pressure, age, coaching, and too much time on the field.  The lack of pressure becomes the biggest issue, because it allows teams to convert too many third downs, and also allows too many big plays.

That's a pretty answer, and would look great in a JR. High essay on why the Buccs defense is slipping. But Brooks' missed tackle on Westbrook Sunday, and his missed tackle at the goaline against the Falcons, has nothing to do with any other player, any coach, any practice technique, or any new coaching scheme. Those two are all on Brooks. Both plays he was there, and in position to make the play, and just didn't.
