What is thought to have been an anonymous prank call warning of an imminent shooting caused a near countywide lockdown of high schools throughout Polk County Thursday afternoon.

The lockdown was soon restricted to schools in the Haines City area as analysis of the call showed the caller referred to Haines City High School, said Rob Davis, director of operations for Polk schools. All lockdown have since been lifted without incident, Davis said.

There is no evidence that there was an actual shooting plot, Davis said.

The crisis began about 12:15 p.m., when a 9-1-1 call center in Dundee received the call. Davis described the call as “informational.” The caller warned that a shooting was about to occur at a high school.

Davis said that investigators would try to identify the caller. And if they catch the person, he or she will face “very stiff penalties.”

Davis also said the event doesn’t entirely surprise him, given the recent Virginia Tech shootings. “It seems like anytime something like this happens, we get copycats and crank calls.”
