His poopshoot has been repeatedly pounded by Verizon FIOS, to the degree that they have formed a special love that only they can understand.

Fortunately for you, he is willing to share his love, and I am sure he would be willing to give you all the info you need. He knows Verizon FIOS very well, and Verizon FIOS knows him "inside and out"

I'm thinking about getting the Verizon fiber optic for my internet, tv, and landline phone.  Does anyone have this?  Pros and cons?  I have verizon broadband and Directv now, for comparison, and I'd save $ if I changed.

i have FiOS and i am very satisfied.  i could be very satisfied because i simply hate brighthouse and all things TimeWarner.  you should know if you are a happy DirecTV customer that the same programming comes with FiOS.  Instead of beaming the signal to your dish, they bring it into a main satellite center then distribute through the fiber - pretty slick...

So you are thinking of switching to FIOS, why? why the hell are you thinking about it. 

Pros:
Internet:
-A true 15mbs (soon to be 20 mbs), not a third of the advertised price like some providers
-You get that speed 24 hours a day, it doesn’t matter if everyone on the street are downloading porn at the same time.  When I was on 7mbs BH my average speed was around 2mbs.

TV
-All channels are true digital and the signal is comparable with a DVD hooked up via component connections. 
-TV signal is three times stronger, and it is noticeable.
-NFL Network and Fox Soccer channel are free.
-Videos on demand are better, plus they will expand it to programs on demand eventually.
-Multi-room DVR with media center.  Watch your recorded programs anywhere in the house.  Share you photos and MP3s on any TV in the house.  This is very useful for me because I have a TV and receiver on the deck so now I can access all my music out there…..CDs are a thing of the past.


Cons:
Internet – none

TV – You don’t get Bay News 9 or Catch 47.

The cable to your house has a capacity of about 400mbs, which is 10 times more than copper, so you are future proofed.

And the tie-breaker if you need one – it is CHEAPER.

I am not sure that is correct.  The old Verizon TV that they provided down the phone line was Direct TV but I think (99% sure) FIOS take direct feeds from all the stations.

mjs - my business partner did the entire network center in Temple Terrace.  i have been told by the people that set up the system that the DirecTV package is where the programming is coming from.  whether or not they have added to it, i don't know, but the backbone of the programming is via DirecTV.

They take the direct TV feed for Verizon Online’s DSL TV service, that package is the same as Direct TV. The only sites I can find say FIOS takes the direct master feed from the original source.

FIOS TV will be the first provider in the world to offer 1080p HD, taking the ESPN feed for special events.

Well, good, that's what I was hoping to hear.  We had pretty much decided to go with Verizon, but I wanted to make sure there were no hidden nightmares that I didn't know about.  We've had Directv since about '99, so I'm really used to them and haven't had a problem except the price hikes.  I'll be happy to have the faster internet and the multi-room DVR.

The Internet is a lot faster and the wireless router is awsome.  I get 15mbs on my laptop through four or five walls.

BTW - the multi-room DVR is an extra $7 a month but I think it is worth it.

Yeah, I saw that about the multi-room; sounds like a small price to pay.  I'm going to get the movie package, too--not the HBO one but the other one with starz and showtime, etc.  STILL cheaper than my Directv.

It fluctuates through the season.  There was a 5 or 6-week stretch early in the season when United where on live every weekend.  The last few weeks they have been one of the four-featured games about every other weekend.

They also have PPV games that only cost $15.  I paid to watch the FA semi-final a couple of weeks ago.

Well, they installed the FIOS today, and we're very happy with it.  Love the DVR and programs on-demand, and the internet is noticeably faster than the verizon broadband we had before.    Thanks for your input!
