Macs aren't really any safer.  The main reason they aren't attacked is sheer numbers.  If someone takes time to create a worm to attack a Mac, they affect a much smaller amount of systems than if they create a Windows based attack.  Therefore if that is your thing, you are going to go after what is going to cause the most damage, which is by far attacking Windows based systems.

For mid size networks (10 or more machines) Norton is fine, but for the individual PC/home user I like AVG.  It is smaller (uses less resources) and you don't have that annoying "time to renew your subscription" hassle.  When I used to be in the PC repair biz (about 18 months ago) AVG would often catch stuff that Nortons missed.
McAffee was an automatic remove, caused more problems than it cured.
