Buccaneer Rookie Put In Lofty Company

TAMPA — The comparisons flattered Sabby Piscitelli, who admitted they weren't fair.

They weren't fair to him, a rookie safety from Boca Raton High, one who played just two seasons of high school football before landing a scholarship offer from coach Dennis Erickson at Oregon State University.

And they weren't fair to John Lynch, a 15-year NFL veteran safety who enters his fourth season with the Denver Broncos after playing 11 for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

When the Bucs selected Piscitelli in the second round with 64th overall pick in April, some draft analysts compared Piscitelli, 23, to Lynch, 35.

"The reality of it, is that he's a legend," Piscitelli said. "He's one of the best to play the game. I don't think you can really compare us, other than that we're both white and we're about the same size.

"He's one of my idols. He's one of my favorite players. I've never met him in person. But I've got to make my own name. I have my own style."

Piscitelli stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 224 pounds, compared to Lynch, who is 6-2, 220. Piscitelli started 12 games last season at strong safety, compiling 64 tackles, one sack and five interceptions.

But Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden guarded against the Piscitelli-Lynch comparisons. The Bucs report to training camp July 26 in Celebration, near Orlando.

"John was one of my favorite players, too, and I'm nothing like Lynch either," Gruden said. "We just want Sabby to be Sabby and put his own spin on the position.

"He's capable of delivering some pop. He's got real good sideline-to-sideline range. We think he's a good blitzer. He's a capable guy coming off the edge, and he can rush with power or rush with speed."

Gruden also counts on Piscitelli to contribute on special teams.

"But to compare you to John Lynch, you'd better check back in six or seven years, because that big guy brought it every week for a long time. It's not real fair, I think, to compare them."

Forbidden by his father from playing tackle football until his junior year of high school, Piscitelli learned the game fast.

"I played baseball in my early high school years," he said. "I wouldn't say it was a sport I wanted to pursue professionally.

"When I started playing football, I had my mind made up that that was the sport for me. I went out my junior season and I fell in love with it."

Piscitelli explained how he did not get much in terms of scholarship offers because he had only played for two years in high school. He did, however, get connected with Erickson, who formerly coached the University of Miami.

"My recruiting was a little misconstrued, a little messed up," Piscitelli said. "I thought Oregon State was my best opportunity to get my foot in the door and go from there."

Going from there led to being drafted by a team in his hometown's state.

"Being in my home state is truly another blessing in disguise," Piscitelli said. "I always wanted to be a professional athlete. I did envision myself as a pro athlete, but I never imagined that I'd be able to do it in my home state."

Perhaps Piscitelli will allow the Lynch comparisons to carry some worth.

"In college, I was known as a playmaker," said Piscitelli, who finished his career with 29 passes defensed, one forced fumble, three fumble recoveries and 15 interceptions, tied for second in school history.

"In three years, I got my hands on the ball like 44 times," he said. "I was a playmaker. I'm one of those guys who likes to make plays and interceptions."

If Lynch is one of his favorite players I'd hate to see how he treats players he doesn't like.

Oh Jesus.

I wonder why Herm Edwards didn't want him.  Or Tony Dungy didn't want him.  I wonder, I wonder...

Lynch was not resigned because his neck was supposedly looking pretty bad.  Bad enough that people who could have actually used him passed him by.  And people who are Godparents to his kids, and people who have coached him, and by people who dearly respect him, as an athlete and a human being.

;Gimme a break with the "Gruden hates everyone" stuff.  It gets old.

44 times he got his hands on the ball. do it in the nfl, and turn out to be a rich man. remember how lynch used to get the ball to secure the game. it would be nice for some of that again.

Boid,

You are wasting you time with him and a few others.

Their hatred for Gruden is so strong they can't deal with reality or maybe Any level of optimism about anyone, as long as Gruden is here.

Guess we are just gonna have put up with it, unfortunatly.

By the way, ever notice they bash like crazy, but never have anything constuctive to say, about anyone.

They are not for the TEAM. They just want to bash. Really think it wouldn't make any difference who the coach is unless we win the SB every year.

Like you, I'm tired of it.

I don't want Sabby to be Lynch, I want him to be better than Phillips and grow into his own player.I'm ready for the season to start now!

This sounds famililar.Does Karl Rove post in here????..Against the War then you hate America and the troops and want Osama for president...
Against Gruden not a Buc fan, then again lately there are a lot of Pat's fans so I am not sure anymore...

GRUDEN is NOT THE BUCS, he is the coach, so by saying someone is not a Buc fans because they are hating on Gruden is no differant than hating on Simms. In fact under this logic you must love every coach, everyone in the FO and every player.

Once again so very, very, very off on the reality of the situation. There is nothing wrong with foaming out of mouth hating Gruden with everything in you, it's all good. When you become an enemy is when every post, every thread, everything you type is throwing hatred for the HC and many of those idiotic posts are so far off from what's really happening. I do't lick Gruden's balls but do like him as the HC of the Bucs and when someone, such as you, does everything to ruin each thread on the god damn MB to prove how much you hate Gruden it becomes an issue.

We're at that point now, you have reached the pinacle putting you in the same company Karen or Chronic. We all hate what happened last year and the HC deserves blame for it, there's no question, but the degree of hatred reaches far past a 4-12 season. It reaches far, far past that.

UMguy - I was for Dungy until they escorted him out of the building - I didn't become upset with the ownership with their decision. I understood by the time it was done that it was best for both parties. Tony was asked to develop the offense and he refused. It has been specualted that he was told to fire an employee (Clyde Christiansen) and he would not so the ownership fired them all. If that is true it showed the stubborness Tony exhibited several years in his refusal to get a better OC.

Fast forward to this year - meeting with Gruden speach by owners that more was expected. Two coaches were fired on the defensive line - where the biggest collapse occurred. Witness the great FA period ad the rebuilding and draft focus of the defense. If he was asked to do this, but did not comply to the owners expectations then that is either insubordination or lack of understanding of the owners expectations.

It's clear that the owners know and trust Gruden more than you. I will support the OWNERS decision - Gruden is still a part of my team.

Coincidentally - I support that COACHES decision to go in another direction from QB due to that positions failures. I trust the guy that the owners trust to make this decision. they are parts of my team.

See that is how a fan rationalizes his support of thir team.

What you want is closer to MUTINY. Don't support the coach that the owners have committed their trust in, just the players? Silly.

Think what you will but Muir should've been escorted out of the building with them.

Here is a novel idea don't read my posts. I don't care whose company you put me in, and hatred is your word not mine I never said I hated anyone. Not wanting a guy to be our coach and hatred are not the same thing, in fact if he was not the OC I would not even mind if he was our HC. Bring in an OC that does not have one specific type of QB as the only option in his mind and the ability to open his mind and a passing game that requires more than an 8 yard pass and I would be happy and could not have as much blame towards Gruden. ! guy calling all the shots does not work, and Gruden is proof of that, he has the last word on personel, and the offense and is the HC. If it were working I would be fine with it, but for the most part with him at the healm it has not worked!
You act like its a shock that I or anybody else would want Gruden gone, like the 4-12 season was just a glitch in an overwise great coaching tenure.
Wanting a QB option that has more than 2 years left in him is not too much to want, but if someone does not agree with YOU they have hatred, I am on the Gruden side of the BB debate, and if I recall you are on the BB side of the fence, so I guess you hate Gruden and I love him right?
