Jon Gruden adressed the media moday afternoon and told reporters after Monday's workout that right end Patrick Chukwurah is "week-to-week" with a knee injury, potentially opening the door for first round pick Gaines Adams to start the season opener

Gruden did not go into the severity of the injury, or how it happened.

Got no problem with that.  I hope we see Adams start all year, with Chuk rotating in on rush downs.

Wait a second, Chuk the guy oft listed as a  LB comes in at DE on rushing plays?  That doesn't seem right.

He's smaller then Adams. He doesn't seem like any kind of designated run stopper to me.

DYK, we have a college football forum... http://www.pewterreport.com/forum/index.php?board=5.0

Sorry, I meant "pass rush" downs...  I'd like to see Adams and Chuk coming off the edges in obvious pass situations

What ever happened with Alex smith and his injury?

All posts are opinions in case you are too stupid to figure that out on your own without me saying it over and over.

What ever happened with Alex smith and his injury?

Unfortunately, Jon Gruden didn't give a sense of the severity of Smith's injury:

From TampaBay.com: http://blogs.tampabay.com/bucs/2007/08/injury-update-1.html

Injury Update

Several Bucs sustained injuries Saturday against the Dolphins.

Alex Smith is on the shelf with an ankle injury and Patrick Chukwurah has a knee injury. Coach Jon Gruden did not give a sense of the severity of Smith's injury, but Chukwurah's could be problematic. Gruden said he is "week to week to week," whatever that means.

Elsewhere, we're still confused about what exactly is going on with right tackle Jeremy Trueblood. It appears he didn't practice today and Gruden said afterward Trueblood was experiencing "symptoms of having a problem." Not sure what that means, either.

Gruden said safety Tanard Jackson (hamstring) and cornerback Phillip Buchanon (hand) could return this week against the Texans, and he added that guard Arron Sears is rehabbing his injured ankle and is expected to play in the season opener, but time will tell.

I love this phrase "symptoms of having a problem."  That's priceless.

This is what else Gruden had to say about Adams and if he would start the season opener.

“I don’t know about Gaines Adams (starting), but his(Chukwurah) injury could result in somebody else starting,” Gruden said. “We haven’t distributed our depth chart for the opening game yet, and we have competition at defensive end.

“The light is definitely on,” Gruden said. “He had some great pressures. We really stunted for the first time in that last game and we’re really pleased with the effort and the raw natural talent he has. It’s all coming together. It’s just a matter of time for Gaines.”

You know what else is priceless....stating in the blog that a player "appeared not to practice". Another marvelous job by one of the writers at the SPiT.

Happy and Peppy and Bursting with love.

What gets me about Gaines is the fact that it is almost like they are trying to find a reason not to start him. I don't understand it - he has played fairly well in preseason and what is really scary - we don't have anybody better. We don't even have anybody who has his skill set. Why on Earth would we put Chuckwurah, a guy who is just a specialist in as the starter at a position where we just spent our #4 overall pick?

I'm sure he is going to play but sweet baby Jesus, let him play already. He is the best option.

Alright, I'd rather see Adams out there than him anyway. I hope Gaines is a starter for all 16 games.

If he's as good as people here think then this should be a no brainer decision on him. Frankly if he's just as good as I think he's been it should be a no brainer because Chuk has done exactly nothing in pre-season (another guy with raves in the off-season than vanished when it mattered).

The situation is just really perplexing to me.

I think it is quite apparent that Gaines is much better than Chuck as a RE. Gaines has played the run which I don't think Chuck has done very well, and also Chuck has got about zero pressure from the RE spot. Why on Earth wouldn't you just start Gaines then? It doesn't make any sense.

Now Chuck was praised when he came in because we thought he would be a LB in the 3-4 scheme and a DE in obvious pass rushing situations. He isn't being used that way...nobody praised him as a pure, starting DE. As a situational guy, yeah, he gets a lot of pressure. As a starter at DE? That's a whole new ballgame and nobody raved about him at that position.

No in the mini-camp reviews he got a lot of notice as always being disruptive, those are the raves not the when he got signed stuff.
