What happends to Green Bay if Favre goes down? Or Indy if Manning goes down? Or NE if Brady goes down? Their super bowl hopes are over in one play.

The league is too thin at the QB position for many teams to hold on to someone at the #2 position that can just come in and win a game. If we had a #2 that could come in and win games, he wont be here for any length of time because some other team will pay him damn good money to start.

This is just how it is in the NFL. Remember that year we went to the Super Bowl...who was our backup that year? That's right...Rob Johnson and remember how bad he was? I remember specifically how bad he was when we had Brad out for a game in Carolina we were damn lucky to win.

The reason you have a guy at #2 on the depth chart is because he isn't as good as your #1. Jeff Garcia was a backup in Philly last year and he lead the team to the playoffs. What happened the very next year? The Eagles let him go...why? Because someone was willing to pay him money to start. And the Eagles were not willing to bench McNabb.

So no....Gradkowski is not going to be as good as Garcia. And every other team around this league is in the same boat. Your starting QB goes down and your season is in serious jeopardy. Look what happened to Carolina when Delhomme went out with injury....their season melted.

Most every team in the league would be in trouble if they lost their starting QB. Period.

There have been teams who have won superbowls with backup QB's.    Doug Williams was a backup when the Redskins won it with him.   He only played because the starter got hurt just before the playoffs.   Hostetler won a superbowl because Phil Simms went down that year.    Teams can win superbowls with backup QB's.    Not with Gradkowski, but with some other backup QB it might be possible.

Yeah, and winless teams sometimes knock off playoff contenders. It happens, just not very often.

I wouldn't say Gradkowski is a backup..more of a last resort.

I did like how the offense came to a complete and screaching halt when Gruden's love child came in to be the QB. Gradkowski seriously put a stench on the offense that reminded everyone of last year and we looked like a 4-12 team in the 2nd 3rd and 4th quarters. Hopefully this puts to rest any notion that Gruden had that Gradkowski is anything other than a 3rd string QB. if we see Gradkowski again this year it better be a 44-3 lead where even he can't screw it up.

Sure if you have a promising young guy you just drafted or an old vet back there you might be able to pull that off but that's rare. And if you have that QB situation...it doesnt last long. There just is not that many decent, proven QBs in the NFL. When you are looking for backups you are usually dealing with either guys who are projects, guys who or injured, or guys that have some problem in their playing ability.

Yes but these instances occurred prior to the free agency era. Back when teams with large payrolls - such as the Giants, Redskins, Niners (Young, Bono, Grbac anyone), etc could afford to keep several QBs on the roster.

Gradkowski had the best completion percentage in the NCAA. He was worth a #6 pick and worth giving a shot. I would have drafted him too....

The draft is a crapshoot especially when it comes to QBs. Look at how Alex Smith completely stinks in San Fran.... yet Tom Brady was a 6th round pick.

Exactly.   8)

Until Gruden finds someone better he is our back-up QB.  Maybe he improves and sticks has a back-up next year, maybe he just gets cut.......who cares either way, he was only a 6th round pick.

It's tough to improve during the regular season as a backup QB when you get almost no reps during the week.
