President Putin plans to introduce an idea during a meeting with President Bush next week to build a tunnel or bridge linking Alaska to Siberia. It would also link rail lines from Asia to the Americas.

The project will cost around $60 billion dollars.

This is sort of old news, but at least now they are proposing a project.  I bet this gets done faster than it takes the BOston Metro area highways to get completed...

Well its about 100 year old news actually. The two countries wanted to do this back in the early 1900s. In fact Czar Nicholas II was already putting plans together to start the project...then the Bolsheviks came to power and the idea was trashed.

It's not surprising Putin wants to bring the idea back. Moscow and western Russia is doing pretty good but the eastern part of the country is in a depression for the most part. Some cities cant even afford a fire department. There is also a lot of untapped resources there. So a direct trade route going to North America would certainly bring industry to that region. Not to mention I am sure Russia would love to charge China money to ship goods through there.

Drive to Alaska, and add on a week to that.

If they build a tunnel to Sakhalin, I would be all for it.  The women there are hot hot hot!  And easy easy easy!

Probably around 9000 miles from Tampa via road.  So if you fancy a day in Moscow you will need at least 20 days vacation for the round trip drive, and about $2500 for the gas.
