mjs? Are you a US citizen? Born here? Whats up with your attitude with US citizens rooting for the US Olympic team? The discussion here is no different that other nations rooting for their athletes.

Citizen yes, born here no. And you are dead wrong about other nations being the same. Dogmatism and jingoism are not something most nations have in the Olympics. I actually post on a foreign board, and they discuss all sports, whether they win a medal or not. Actually the talk all day was about the relay last night, which the American won.

I feel sorry that other nations aren't rooting for their athletes as strongly as we are here in the US. Anyone which has the ability to make an Olympic team, regardless of nation, has lots to be proud of and that person should have thier nation rooting for that person.

Worldwide athletes trained for the past 4 years just to show up in China? The Olympic ideal is for each team or individual to win while representing their nation in the event they are participating in.

You do know around 500 US athletes turned up pretty much knowing they would not be winning in their chosen event.  There are about 800 medals up for grabs but 17,000 athletes compete.  The majority know they are not there to win a gold medal.  

And don't try and compare the Olympics with professional and/or domestic sports.

The US Mens team lost their two best guys due to injury before the games. Many say after those injuries that the team would be lucky to get bronze. Now a silver is well within reach.

Lets hope for a mistake from the Chinese......think gold.

Yes. Difference is I also appreciate the Olympic ideal, which you obviously don't. It is not a team event, its a collection of thousands of individuals from all over the world that happen to represent their countries. Winning is great but there is so much more to the Olympics than that.

Let's take your Olympic attitude and apply it to the NFL and the 32 teams. The NFL is a collection of teams (collectivist state) from states across the US, the cities aren't teams, but rather collections of players which are practicing towards a common goal. Then if the common goal for the common good of the atheletes isn't met( a championship), there was always the spirit of participating in the NFL season. See how that attitude supports a franchise for a period of time.

For China to win more gold they need to get a big gold medal lead right now. Because when the team sports get completed (Vollyball, basketball, softball, etc..) and combined with track and field which the US usually does much better in than China....the US will start padding up that gold medal total.

This olympics was designed to give China an early lead hoping to gain momentum for their athletes in later events that the US usually dominates. China is doing well, but the US is at this point too close. And we are not supposed to be leading the total count right now. We are only 4 medals behind in gold. Considering the events still out there.....that lead is absolutely nothing.

WOW, sick high bar by Jonathan Horton.  Even the Chinese crowd went wild, and they turned up expecting an easy gold for China.

Phelps moves on to the 100m fly finals. Rest of the world should be afraid.

ROFLMAO ... the fact is the OLYMPIC medals table is ordered by golds won, then silver, then bronze.  Just because the biased US media prefer to distort the table does not make it official.

Like I said, only thing that matters is who wins. All the stories you want are good for filler but if you dont win with that story then its pointless. America has the most medals by the way, 18 at this moment. Phelps is getting ready for his next race.


At the end, all that matters is who has won the most. America rules and will win the most medals.
