Whether somebody was born homeless and in the ghetto or with a silver spoon in their mouth, in this country they both have the same opportunity to make with themselves what they choose to make of themselves.  There are many success stories from each group, as well as failures from each group.

You're right. It would be nice to think that every human being could live a life of prosperity. But in this
system, we'll always have the haves and have nots. And yes, being born with a silver spoon in your
mouth is a huge advantage. As well as other factors.

The fact is, there is always a demand for fast food workers, janitors, farmers, landscapers, etc. As long as we have these millions of jobs to fill, we will have poverty. Everyone has the potential to rise up, but we still need those millions of workers on the bottom. Since in our economic system there is a large amount of Americans doomed to live in poverty, I say the least the government can do is help make their lives a little better off. These are fellow Americans, and I see helping them is more important than our military spending, NASA, aid to other countries, missile shield in Europe, tax cuts for the rich, etc.

It would be nice to think that every human being had the desire to make something of themselves.  Unfortunately, many are far too lazy.  Some who try won't succeed.  Some who try will succeed greatly.  That's the way of the world.  But everyone has the opportunity to succed.

The people that end up poor... usually end up making excuses and want the govt to help them become successful thats why.

URBAN MYTH:
EVERYONE in this country is given the means of acquiring and possessing property, and pursuing and obtaining happiness and safety. EVERYONE. If you want to make it in this country, you can. You flip that card on here so much that people arnet taken care of and Republicans are greedy and neglectful of human rights. People choose their life in this country, and if you want to be a janitor with no health insurance that is your choice and you arent entitled to have the government take care of you. We wouldnt be where we are today as a nation if it wasnt for centuries of hardwork and people striving to make good lives for themself


The above is the lie that the "right" tells themselves to justify their no holds barred approach to business. It is not possible....I repeat....it is not possible to live an ethical and moral life AND pursue profit, maximize returns and compete head on in the market place. 

You choose what's important to you.  I like money as much as the next person, but I am through with corporate America and its exploitive policies towards its workers, vendors, laws, patriotism ( export jobs overseas that use child labor, exploit workers don't pay overtime, spew toxins everywhere, adulterate their products etc.)  all for a few sheckles....

And I personally am going to turn my back on spend to save this country or any other.  I really don't need a better cell phone, another tv, another row of clothes in my closet, the latest car, diamonds that last forever, viagra, ipods, or any other crap with built in obselence.  I am over it!!!!

Time for Walden Pond...or at least the 21st century version thereof.  It'll take a while to get there, but I'm going....

that is part of it...you can't just make a blanket statement that everybody has an opportunity to succeed...you have to define opportunity and define success...and not everybody is presented with the same opportunities

i just used that as an example to make a point...so many post on here blames every person that doesn't have their own health care (or any other issue that we have discussed) on being lazy and not working hard enough...there are a lot of hard working poor people out there, they don't all sit on the couch and smoke dope and complain bout havin no job

true, we all make choices that affect the future, but we can't all make the perfect choice that leads us into the perfect situation...we have all made poor choices, you (anybody reading this) included...and we can't all "make it big"...we can't all be rich....so the one's that do make it usually had to have some things go their way....a couple of my friends are pretty smart and both have college degrees...one can't find a job that allows him to further his education at all and the other has to go back to school to learn a trade while working fulltime to get some really crappy benefits...both came from upper middle class families and one of them is one of the hardest working people i know...meanwhile, i am lucky enough to have known the right person and be available at the right time to get my job and i know another guy who has about the same qualifications as me who now can't find a job that pays more than 1/2 of what i make and he is working 7 days (60 hrs) a week...he has a kid and one on the way...where is his opportunity...he works hard, he put in the effort to get an education, training and experience...how come he's not rich...there are successes and failures from all groups of america but we certainly don't all get the same opportunities

fact is we need people at all "class" levels and at all levels of income...if we all made the same amount or if we all "succeeded" as you suggest we all have the opportunity to do...then there would be nobody to do the menial jobs that some of us are unwilling to do...we rely on those janitors and the fruit pickers and that guy who is directing traffic around some road construction that sits there all day holding a sign wondering how he'd gonna afford his child's dental care...so you might want to start appreciating them a little bit and realize that without them your life would be a whole lot more difficult
