Why doesn't baseball have a cap like the NFL?  I don't follow baseball, but doesn't that make sense?

Kudos to the Steinbrenner family and Brian Cashman. It must nice to have owners so committed to fielding the best team that they can buy.

Blame MLB for allowing the league to go without a salary cap for so long. Then again, I see the good side of having Goliath teams like the Yanks. When small town teams beat them in the playoffs, it's VERY, VERY sweet and memorable for many years afterwards. It's not fair for the teams who are cash strapped but it makes for some great, David vs. Goliath match-ups. I hope the Rays kick their butt again during the regular season and the Yanks miss the playoffs again.

I am a Mets fan and have benefitted from no salary cap. But I am 100% in favor of one. In the meantime, I can't say anything bad about a team, like the Yanks, that plays by the rules and does everything they can to make their team the best.

Ticket prices for Mets and Yanks in their new stadiums are going to be astronomical. Bad economy? Surely you jest! Economy, Yankonomy...

some of you guys whine like 2nd graders.  Toddybuc, LMAO, your wishing injury on 2 people because they got big pay days makes you look like a pissed off little girl who didnt get her way.

I am all for a cap.  But keep in mind the NYY payroll will be down this year from last.  Teixeira gets paid 22.5/yr, where was the outcry from you school girls when Giambi was making 23.5?  WAHHHHHHHHHHH

People are pissed because the NYY have finally FINALLY done good for themselves in FA... but it doesnt guarentee anything.

Yanks can get Manny... and still cut payroll
December 23, 2008

I've made the point a few times lately that money is no object for the Yankees. Well, for all their spending, if they went with the 25 guys currently on their roster (including Mark Teixeira at $22.5 million for the purposes of this discussion), they'd have a payroll of approximately $192 million after arbitration-eligible players and limited-service players have their contracts worked out.

There's been some talk about the Yankees expecting their payroll to be under $200 million this year. I don't know why that's a magic number after they paid $222.5 million to miss the playoffs this year, but whatever -- let that be the guide here. At $192 million, you'd expect them to stop spending on big names, maybe go over the magic figure to bring back Andy Pettitte, but that's it. Bringing in Manny Ramirez to team with Alex Rodriguez and Teixeira in what might be a record-setting lineup? Forget it.

Well, here's how the Yankees can keep their payroll under $200 million and still fit Ramirez into their loaded lineup. It's a two-step process, and one that I doubt will be popular with Yankee fans (and doubt will happen), but for those who want to see Manny in pinstripes, this is how it could be done.

<Edit>

The bottom line is that if the Yankees cut ties with Pettitte, maintain Brian Cashman's faith in Hughes and get a team to pay Matsui's full salary in a trade, they can have Ramirez and a payroll that's $20 million lower than what they paid in 2008.

And in the Bronx, where "win at all costs" takes on a different meaning, it would be money well spent. After all, the city picks up the tab on ticker-tape parades.

That's irrelevant. That's like saying the CEO of AIG took a pay cut from $125 million a year to $100 million a year. It's still obscene. And so is the Yanks' payroll. But if people are pissed, take it out on the league and not the Yanks, who are playing by the rules.

The league won't change and adopt a cap because the league does well with the way things are now.

Does it really matter who the yankees sign? They still suck and cant beat out the Rays or Red Sox for the Division....hell even for a playoff spot. Steinbrenner just looking like a typical a s s as usual.

Spoken like a young fan.

Before last year, the Yanks had made the playoffs 13 years in a row. Kind of hard to use the word "suck" and Yankees in the same Universe.

Will they win it all? I hope not. But saying they will "suck" is just juvenile.

Steinbrenner looking like an azz as usual? George is not in charge of the team any more. And any fan who wouldn't want Hank and the Steinbrenner
team as their owner is insane. Imagine them in charge of the Bucs and using as much cap space as feasible? We'd all be jumping up and down.

Yankees from 93-06 were like the big bully in the AL East. Now, they are just, as usual trying to BUY their championship. That payroll for A-Rod, Jeter, Tex, Sabathia, Pettite, and more....That has GOT to be over 700+ Million. I know A-Rod got an extension for 250 mil. Sabathia and Tex both have 9 digit salaries combined comes out to 162 + 170 = 332 Million. Who in their right effin mind pays 332 million for 2 baseball players?! The Yankees are a joke. MLB is becoming a joke...Half the people who wear a Yankees hat arent even yankee fans or do they care. I, for one, think its time America suddenly realize that Athletes are not that important to the fabric of society and downgrade their pay on all levels. They should get no more then a million a year for playing a sport. Its a joke nowadays.

You're bringing up different issues in that post.

The bottom line is they are playing within the rules.

The only way to stop this is for fans to stop going to the games. Considering the expensive seats sold in the new Yankee Stadium went like hot cakes, don't expect that to happen next year.

Its one thing to have a team that actually plays by the traditional rules and doesnt try to steal everybody from the rest of the teams. Also, Athlete loyalty is becoming pathetic. You wont see guys like Mike Alstott or Derrick Brooks in Baseball anymore, just sticking to one franchise his entire career. They go out where the most money is paid. If they would just settle for less money (crazy I know) but if they had some pride in their town and team, the Yankees would be nothing. They have no possible Minor league team development. Even if they did, I would'nt know cause they just go to Free Agency to buy everyone.

Did you read how the rest of MLB will be paying for the Yankees new stadium? Right there is enough reason to hate the Yankees.

I need no extra reasons to hate the Yanks. Growing up on Long Island as a Mets' fan, in the shadow of the Yanks, was bad enough.
These last 13 years have made it worse. But I don't blame their owners for doing everything in their power to win championships.
Every fan wants an owner like that.

As far as greed and lack of loyalty and athletes in general? Yeah, it sucks. Not like it used to be at all. And it's going to get worse
until the fans take action and stop going to the games in large numbers. Our ticket prices will keep going up and we'll keep paying
it. Until, the bottom falls out of the economy next year. It will be interesting to see how much sports is affected by that.

Navybuc's posts in this thread are nonsensical and misguided.

There is this thing called revenue sharing and luxury tax... the NYY voted against both, yet both still passed amongst 30 owners.  The NYY vote in these issues weighs no more than Tampa, the marlins, the brewers or the nationals.  a vote is a vote is a vote.  If MLB wanted a cap, there would be one.  The NYY dont pull the strings.  But way to misguide your hate.... you're pretty good at doing that around here.

Yankees suck?  Yeah, they're awful.  Steinbrenner is a TERRIBLE owner.... LOL.. not sure what they teach yall in the navay down souf but up here we're about winning.  The Yankees continue to reinvest in their product and the NYY season ticket holders like myself LOVE it.
