Im in favor of keeping Rice this year and then Franchising him for 2008.  and then call it a career for him with the Bucs.

By 2009 we should be able to find someone that can fill in for him.

Even if he looses a step, he is still just as good as most LE's.  Right now(sad to say) I believe he is the best player we have on our team.  We cant afford to loose him yet.

You still will never answer my question. How many players who are supposedly the best at their respective position play 60 minutes and aquire not stats?

Wait, now stats matter? Before they didn't matter when they showed Rice was doing well. Wow, you really will hold any ground for 1 second to serve your goals. We've been this ground before and guys like Freeney, Strahan and other get blanked. Everyone gets blanked. The problem you have is that you don't understand how hard it is to do what Rice, or Freeney do. No one gets there all the time. No one has averaged 16 sacks per game for their career and so obviously no one even gets there once per game so they are going to get shut down in some games and even more apparent is that no one gets there every play so all the "I saw him get blocked" stuff is true as well, he did. Any DE you want will get blocked - you should know what that looks like since White was stoned most of the year, getting blocked looks like that. The game isn't about never getting blocked but about actually not getting blocked a few times. A guy that doesn't get blocked 10+ times per year is a huge value. A pass rush THREAT is valuable.

Frankly this season should have showed that to you. This year we were 30th in sack ranking (http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl2005.php) and dropped 25 sacks. Last year we were 16th (http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/dl2005.php) and had 36 sacks. What was missing? Hmmm, not Dewayne White who got more chances to be great, no the missing element was Rice. We were 14th in pass defense (http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef2005.php) last year and were 27th this year (http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef.php) Hmmm, funny how that total lack of a pass rush does that to you. Oh and BTW, yes Kelly was missing but notice in 2003 (http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/teamdef2003.php) and we were 5th so his absence alone can't explain the drop off.
Still can't answer that can you all knowing, all powerfull DalOz? Pay no attention to the man behind the keyboard!!!!

I agree that Rice was not having a good year when he got hurt. But I didnt see anything from White that showed me hes better than Rice. White made plays here and there but I dont recall him standing out or making that big of a difference in any game

Rice is a stud pass rusher.  No doubt.  They don;t pay him to stuff runs, they pay him to collapse pockets.  Even if he doesn't get there, he still is a factor in opposing game plans.

He does get blanked, but so do a lot of guys, as Dal has noted.

I would give him once more chance, i think his injuries just bugged him alot, and he had no other help on the d-line to get pressure

if we add a good DT (Okoye) or another DE like Carriker, he will still have at least another year left in him

he is overpaid tho

Rice isn't going anywhere. That would hinder the efforts of the FO to upgrade the defensive line and remember, the cap room is with Rice's cap hit.

We need more than upgrades, we need to get younger. Keeping Rice won't do that.

Losing Rice and adding a rookie DE doesn't help this defense right away. Keeping Rice and adding depth to the DL rotation does help this defense.

Losing Rice and adding young talent to the line helps for the future....
