I've always wondered... Can a player basically refuse to be franchised?

Briggs has let the bears know that if they franchise him, he will not be a happy camper.

Still beats being a "poor bloke", like myself...

I've always wondered... Can a player basically refuse to be franchised?

if i recall correctly, if you sign the franchise offer , then you are paid what mjs said above, the avg of the top 5 players at your position.  if you you refuse to sign it, then you have to hope another team ponies up a couple of high draft picks to compensate your team. That's mandatory, another team can't sign a franchise player w/o compensating the former team with a few high draft picks. I think its two 1st rd picks with the franchise tag.   So once team A slaps the franchise tag on you, you are either playing for team A at top 5 position money, playing for team B after they have given a couple 1st rd picks to your previous team, or sitting out like McCardell.  the reason guys dont like the franchise tag is that essentially they are stuck with the same team because other teams dont give away multiple 1st rd picks often.  it also doesn't allow them to hit the open market and have teams get into a bidding war for their services.  Briggs, if franchised, would have a 1 year deal and could "only" make the avg of the top 5 LBs.  but on the open market, he'd be the most sought after FA and could certainly sign for more money and a long term deal elsewhere.  If franchised, Briggs is looking at 6 mill and change next year, but if he hit FA, he could probably get 10+ mill in guranteed money from another club.

That price for QBs makes it even funnier that some nuts on here wanted to FT Simms.

IIRC, McKay franchised Ahanotu, then signed him but lost the franchise designation due to a clerical error.

Do you think that the Bucs will use their franchise tag next year with Brian Kelly?
