The cost of getting a driver's license, car registration and vehicle title is about to get a lot more expensive.

Jacking up the cost of putting a vehicle on the road is one of the steps the Florida Legislature took to balance this year's budget as tax receipts plummeted. Little of the money stays local even though local property taxes subsidize the cost of a driver's license if you get it at the county Tax Collector's Office instead of the state Department of Motor Vehicles. The increases take effect Sept. 1. If you're due for license or registration renewal after that, consider getting it done early.

Here's a look at the price hikes

Renewing driver's license:
Before: $20
After: $48
Percent increase: 140%

Delinquent fee
Before: $1
After: $15
Percent increase: 1400%

After: $25
Percent increase: 150%

Registration renewal

Vehicles over 3,500 lbs For example: Chevy Silverado, Chevy Impala, Ford Explorer, Dodge Charger, Nissan Maxima, Toyota 4Runner

After: $71.15

Well, join the club. I pay about $85 in Illinois to renew my registration sticker each year. There's talk of that going up as well.

Thanks for the heads up. Do you know if they've raised registration prices on boats?

The cig taxes haven't even kicked in yet. It is the companies raising prices out of fear.

Geez, I never knew how good it was in Florida until I moved to a state where they tax your cars as personal assets every year.  My first year I paid almost $2000 (yes, with three zeros) for my car taxes alone in order to get my tags.

They do this every year and tax based on value.  After 5 years I could have bought a new Kia for what I paid in taxes.

I have since moved to another state, we will see what their rates are...

Actually, the Cigar tax took effect on April 1st...that was the Federal Tax to pay for the SCHIP program.....
