Glazer: Leftwich to start for Tampa
Posted by Josh Alper on August 29, 2009 10:22 AM ET
On Friday, Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris said that the team would be making their starting quarterback choice in the near future. It appears that the future is now.

Jay Glazer of FOX is reporting that Morris spoke to his team on Saturday morning and told them that Byron Leftwich would be under center when the Bucs host the Cowboys on September 13th. On Friday, Morris outlined why Leftwich could be his choice.

"If Byron Leftwich is your selection, [it's because of] his leadership, the fact that he's won 12 games in this league before, the fact that he's a big, strong-armed guy that can make all the throws. ... He has the savvy, has the toughness, [is] mentally sharp, [has] all the qualities that you look for in a quarterback."

Leftwich started two of the three Buccaneers preseason games this summer. He completed 21-of-43 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown. Luke McCown, his chief competition, was 15-of-28 for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

First-round pick Josh Freeman is expected to be the third-string quarterback, which leaves Josh Johnson's future in Tampa as something to watch as the Buccaneers cement their final roster over the next eight days.

Here's the linkie:  http://msn.foxsports.com/nfl/story/10000190/Leftwich-wins-No.-1-quarterback-job-with-Bucs

Well McClown had every chance to take this job...Now he'll be packing his bags with his best friend...

So lefty starts, jj backups till freemans ready, then freeman goes after byeweek

McClown is traded to Greenbay...(If they even want him anymore)

And all the boards are happy! :D

McCown had every chance to take this job and in my opinion took it.  He completed more passes to worse receivers.  Against Miami stovall made leftwich look like a god on some if not most of his receptions.  McCown was given no chance whatsoever to get the ball off and when he did receivers were dropping balls or not holding on as they went out of bounds.  Ill be praying for Freeman week 2.  Hope Leftwich makes me bite my words.

People will be on this thread **CENSORED**ing soon, but the fact of the matter is that it has been reported since OTA's that Leftwich was doing better than McCown. I was rooting for McCown. He's a likable guy but when the coaches took the "whole body of work" into account, Leftwich was the call. McCown just didn't distinguish himself enough during the 3 preseason games to overcome all of that. Hopefully, now that Lefty's the man, he can work on getting his timing down with the receivers.

Not only that, but Lefty acts like a leader.  He has that air about him.  McCown is a happy go lucky type of guy.  As a person, McCown is great, as a player, not so much.

Personally, i said scrap them both and let JJ start till Freeman is ready.  Then you can find out if JJ can be a reliable backup when the time comes :P

He took it in your opinion?  Please.  Neither QB was impressive, which is why Morris was having such a difficult time.  He decided to go with a guy who has started for a successful team before over a guy who has won 1 game in his career.

Not saying Leftwich did great, but Morris strictly went off of "Madden Ratings" in this one.

Thank god this didn't go to Game 4.

Now we just have to hope that Lefty can take a page from the Kerry Collins Book of Spare QB's and knock us out a good season.

All posts are opinions in case you are too stupid to figure that out on your own without me saying it over and over.

No, I'd guess that like all staters he'll get 1-2 series and then, hopefully, we see Freeman for the rest of the game.
