well we can at least say Bryant did far more for this team than Carnell ever did, yet folks already have him in the HOF around here.....strange indeed.

He'll be healthy soon and kicking WINNING field goals for a contender.  Nugent ain't half the kicker Bryant is.

Compare the statistics, they're almost clones. The only differences are that Nugent is younger, has longer kickoffs and isn't hurt.

Later Matt!

This is sad.  A fight betwen kickers.  Nugent may be younger, but he was cut from another NFL team for a reason - he is a hand-me-down.  Now he can be the Bucs hand-me-down patch for a season until they get someone else in here next year.  This has not been a competition, this has been one kicker doing an okay job in the preseason winning the position by default.  To think anything different is ludicrous.

He was cut because he was hurt. That is why

From the Newark Star Ledger (here in NY where I live):

Jets K Mike Nugent declined the team's contract offer and will test the open market.

The end of the Nuget!? Herm Edwards was rightly mocked for thinking the Jets were one kicker away from a title, spending a second-round pick on Nugent in 2005. They were rewarded with four mediocre seasons. Jay Feely, also a free agent, is expected to re-sign as the Jets kicker.

The Jets offered Nugent a competition for his job since Jay Feely who was older came in and outperformed him last year.  He declined the offer and found a place to sign with the Bucs instead.  He never performed up to expectations for the Jets, a team I was stuck with until I got DirecTV five years ago and could watch the Bucs again.  If the Bucs use him, he will be okay - but he will never be as accruate as Bryant who is now a 85% accuracy kicker, and still 100% under 40 yards. The Bucs will be happy if Nugent breaks 95% at under 40 yards, mark my words - I watched this guy disappoint NY fans for too many years.  Clutch kicking he is not the best... just watch and see.

100% under 40 yards? He has missed ten kicks under 40 yards his career.

Not in Tampa I believe - if not I stand corrected. If Nugent only misses four times under 40 yards then I will be very pleased.  he has missed an extra point twice in three seasons (well under 40 yards I believe).  He is an 83 percent kicker each season between 30 and 39 yards (don't tell me Bryant is worse - he is not).  He is a 77% kicker between 40-49 yards.  Over 50?  He is 33%.

Tampa is getting a stronger leg with less accuracy, there is no question about that.  Just hope he does not cost them too many games.

His kickoffs help field position which is a very big plus. Bryant can't hit anything over 50 anymore so he is useless there. It was time to move on.

By the way, I looked it up.  Bryant in all four sesaons for Tampa made 100% of his kicks 40-49 yards.  If you are talking about before Tampa, yes, he missed some in that range.  However Nugent has NEVER kicked 100 percent in that range, you can look it up yourself.

I am glad you believe that... please do not cry to anyone when he misses less than 40 yards.  He wil do it, and he will miss at least one extra point this year unless a miracle happens... count on it.

For some reason, I like reliablity at the shorter ranges (extra points, less than 40 yards) than a slightly improved opportunity over that range.  I still think of Nugent has a hand-me-down.  Better?  Maybe, but more likely just different from Bryant.

It appears everyone missed the "less than truthful" part.
