Birds out to keep Mikell, Thomas

Although the Eagles want to re-sign pending free agents Juqua Thomas and Quintin Mikell, they can announce a deal only with Mikell before free agency starts on Friday.

A team source confirmed yesterday that under arcane NFL rules, since Thomas played last season for the NFL veteran minimum, he is prohibited from signing with his current team until free agency starts.

This is a technicality, of course. The team and agent Kennard McGuire can privately come to terms this week, as long as they don't sign the contract or announce they've reached an agreement. Bottom line: The Eagles remain likely to bring back Thom-as, perhaps their most consistent defensive lineman down the stretch, but the deal won't be announced before the start of free agency.

The Eagles are unlikely to make offers right away to any of their other nine pending free agents. Team sources have said the team will not attempt to retain its two highest-profile free agents, quarterback Jeff Garcia and wideout Donté Stallworth.

I can't believe they are letting Stallworth walk. That is ridiculous. That guy gave them a good WR who wasn't a locker room disruption and they are going to let him go despite all the WR problems they have had over the years. What a stupid decision. I understand them letting Garcia go but they have rocks in their head.

Eagles re-signed S Quintin Mikell to a four-year contract.

Twice Philadelphia's special teams MVP, Mikell probably could've gotten a chance to compete to start had he tried the open market. Without the numbers, the signing looks great for the Eagles as he'll continue to star in kick coverage and provide solid insurance behind Sean Considine.
