A news you can use column:
• during an Equal Opportunity training brief for a Pennsylvania Army Reserve unit, Evangelical Christianity was number one on a list showing examples of "religious extremism." Catholicism was also named, along with the Jewish Defense League, the Fundamentalist Church of the Latter Day Saints, Al Qaeda, Hamas, the Ku Klux Klan, Sunni Muslims, the Nation of Islam--and Islamophobia. Army spokesman George Wright contended the presentation was "an isolated incident not condoned by the Dept. of the Army."

You know what is condoned by the Army? Not giving Purple Hearts to those killed by Islamic terrorist Maj. Nidal Hasan, who slaughtered 13 and wounded 32 of his fellow soldiers at Fort Hood in 2009. The Pentagon's excuse? Awarding the Purple Hearts to the Fort Hood victims would make it harder to convict Hasan in the death-penalty case and "deprive the victims of these crimes the right to see justice done." That would be the same justice-seeking Pentagon who labeled the crime "workplace violence." And lest anyone forget, at the time of the massacre, then-Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey said, "As horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that's worse."

Here's something far worse than that, George. Progressives, who operate much like termites, insinuate themselves into institutions they eventually turn to ideological rot. It happened to America's universities, its publics schools, the mainstream media, and the entertainment culture, over the course of decades. Yet for years, there was one institution that remained staunchly conservative, namely the military.
 
That the military remained the boil on the butt of progressivism is no accident. People with a first-hand experience engaging America's enemies--say religious extremists, for example--have traditionally had little use for the touchy-feely, hand wringing, "why do they hate us" garbage that progressives regularly spew.

Now military tradition, like most American traditions in conflict with the progressive worldview, is under assault. It is no longer deniable that progressives have turned the military into another exercise in social engineering. As with every other institution, the long term goal is the removal of another obstacle to progressive hegemony. The military is the last--and by far the most important--domino to fall.

• in Great Britain, mobs of hooligans spent Tuesday night celebrating the death of Margaret Thatcher. In cities across the nation, police were assaulted, riots erupted, and stores were looted and vandalized, in scenes reminiscent of the violence that took place there in 2011. Thatcher once said that the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money to spend. That's only half the problem. The other half is that you eventually run out of anything resembling dignity, decency and common sense, concepts these clueless thugs would willingly toss on the ash heap of history. That's the same ash heap where Britain itself is headed.

• in America, the Republican Party is trying to toss itself on the ash heap of history. The latest "comprehensive immigration reform bill" reportedly totals 1500 pages, and bet the farm that millions of illegals will be on a "pathway to citizenship," long before anything resembling border security actually amounts to border security. Why any political party would countenance, much less endorse, adding millions of people to the voting rolls of the opposite party--based on the ludicrous hope that they can win Hispanic hearts and minds and votes in the process--might set the historical standard for denial, coupled with unabashed brown-nosing. Memo to Marco Rubio: the first rule of politics is, don't get rolled. Rubio as presidential timber? If he signs onto this deal, more like timber--period.

• this week, over 700 Special Ops veterans sent a letter to Congress demanding a special investigation into the attack in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012. So far, a totally-in-the-tank media has managed to keep a lid on a scandal that makes Watergate look like amateur hour.  Once again, I'll offer a spineless Republican National Committee a thirty second commercial they can run nationwide. Gather together family members of Chris Stevens, Sean Smith, Tyrone S. Woods and Glen A. Doherty, the four men killed in the attack. Add in any relatives you can find of the 20-30 survivors who remain "off limits," courtesy of the federal government. Put them all on camera, and have these relatives demand to know what happened. If they've been told to keep quiet, have them mention that as well. After they speak, cut to Hillary Clinton testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, when she uttered the immortal words, "What difference at this point does it make?" End the commercial with the line, "To the families of the victims, as well as every other decent and patriotic American, it makes all the difference in the world."

• a Texas public university professor is being investigated by school administrators for allegedly forcing students in her graphic design class to create anti-gun posters--for her personal anti-gun campaign. Jennifer Yucus, Assistant Professor of Graphic Art/Design at Midwestern State University, allegedly told students who objected to the task to rationalize their objections by thinking of it as a job from an employer. At some point, even the dimmest of dim bulbs are going to realize that a college education doesn't come with the remotest guarantee that there is a "job from an employer" waiting for everyone who graduates. What is waiting is a mountain of debt for those still willing to tolerate bonehead professors, leftist indoctrination, and very little in the way of real world preparation. As it stands now, most of these kids will be paying off their college debt with tips--as many college graduates, currently working as waiters and bartenders, have discovered. I'd like to sympathize, but the so-called "youth vote" helped reelect Barack Obama. Thus they own the Obama-inspired Era of New Normal, a combination of chronic unemployment and dangerously high levels of debt that will drag younger generations down for years. Yet maybe some of these kids may still be able to make ends meet--until they're forced to buy health insurance or pay a fine. That's part of the New Normal as well.

• Finally, a story the mainstream media avoids like the plague: the trial of abortion practitioner Kermit Gosnell, facing multiple counts of murder for allegedly killing seven babies after they were delivered alive, as well as 41-year-old Karnamaya Monga, who died following a botched abortion procedure. The latest testimony comes from clinic employee Sherry West, who said she heard a baby scream during a live-birth abortion, and it "really freaked me out." "I can't describe it. It sounded like a little alien," West testified, adding that the baby was about 18 to 24 inches long, making it one of the largest babies she had seen delivered at Gosnell's clinic.

When investigators searched Gosnell's facility last year, they found bags and bottles containing aborted babies scattered throughout the building, jars holding babies' severed feet lining a shelf, and a shocking level of filthy, and unsanitary conditions. The only thing more shocking is the indifference of state officials who, as the the grand jury investigation reveals, did nothing, despite receiving reports about problems at the facility.

With the sexually dysfunctional society we live in today (that actually blotches out a woman's breast or butt) shows how incredibly conflicted we have become in America.   

When you have a government paying for babies from those that can't afford them you have the crux of the problem on both sides.

Back-Alley Abortion Never Ended
The Kermit Gosnell murder trial challenges a traditional defense of Roe v. Wade.

Safety is one of the most potent defenses of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that imposed a national policy of abortion on demand. Women had abortions even before it was legal to do so, the argument goes, but restrictive laws forced them to go to back-alley quacks. In this view, the story of Kermit Gosnell, the Philadelphia abortionist on trial for the murders of one woman and seven infants, is a cautionary tale about illegal, not legal, abortion. The facts tell a different story.

Back-alley abortion was indisputably a problem before Roe. Deep in the 281-page report that accompanied the 2011 indictments of Gosnell and his staff, the Philadelphia grand jury recounted an example from the city's history.

It was called the Mother's Day Massacre—the brainchild of Harvey Karman, an eccentric California man without medical training who had served 2½ years in prison for performing illegal abortions in the 1950s. Karman teamed with a young Philadelphia doctor who offered to perform abortions on 15 impoverished women, each between four and six months pregnant, who were bused to the Philadelphia clinic from Chicago on Mother's Day 1972.

What the women didn't know was that they were guinea pigs for a device Karman had invented, which he called the "super coil." He had tested it only on wartime rape victims in Bangladesh, where he had traveled under the sponsorship of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Complication rates were high, and little wonder. A colleague of Karman's Philadelphia collaborator described the contraption as "basically plastic razors that were formed into a ball. . . . They were coated into a gel, so that they would remain closed. These would be inserted into the woman's uterus. And after several hours of body temperature, . . . the gel would melt and these . . . things would spring open, supposedly cutting up the fetus."

As in Bangladesh, the Philadelphia experiment was a failure. Nine of the 15 women suffered serious complications. One needed a hysterectomy.

The following year, the Supreme Court decided Roe v. Wade. It would be 37 more years before the Philadelphia doctor who carried out the Mother's Day Massacre would go out of business. His name was Kermit Gosnell.

The advent of "safe, legal abortion" didn't interfere with Gosnell's back-alley career. The grand jury's account suggests that other abortionists treated him less as an outlaw than as a niche player in the abortion market. He earned a bad reputation in Philadelphia but received referrals from across the Eastern Seaboard. Many of the women dispatched to him were "well beyond" 24 weeks pregnant, the legal limit in Pennsylvania.

"Gosnell was known as a doctor who would perform abortions at any stage, without regard for legal limits," the grand jury reported. "His patients came from several states, including Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina, as well as from Pennsylvania cities outside the Philadelphia area, such as Allentown. He also had many late-term Philadelphia patients because most other local clinics would not perform procedures past 20 weeks." The woman Gosnell is accused of murdering with a drug overdose, 41-year-old Karnamaya Mongar, came from Virginia and was referred by a clinic either there or in the District of Columbia.

The grand jury did not name any of the clinics, hospitals or doctors who made referrals to Gosnell, except for a Delaware clinic where he also worked part-time. Its narrative suggests, however, that "legitimate" abortionists routinely availed themselves of Gosnell's services to help their patients evade legal and ethical limits on late-term abortion. This may be a fruitful subject for legislative investigation, either in Harrisburg or Washington.

According to the grand jury, Gosnell's method of "abortion" in these late-term cases was infanticide, plain and simple. He or an untrained staffer would induce labor, deliver the baby alive, and then perform the procedure they called by the chilling euphemism "snipping"—slashing the infant to death with scissors to the neck and spine. "Over the years, there were hundreds of 'snippings,' " the grand jury found. But bodies had been disposed of and files destroyed, so the evidence was sufficient to prosecute in only seven cases. One of those victims, a neonatologist testified, was a boy of "32 weeks, if not more, in gestational age." That is, his mother had been at least 7½ months pregnant.

Why were these horrors allowed to persist for decades? Even if the infanticides had been concealed, there were ample other irregularities in the clinic's operations, including filth, unsanitized instruments, unqualified staff and dangerously inappropriate use of drugs. When the clinic was finally raided in 2010, it was the result of a federal narcotics investigation.

Part of the reason for the regulatory failure was simple bureaucratic indifference or incompetence. Inspectors from the Pennsylvania Department of Health visited several times between 1979 and 1993, noted problems, and didn't bother following up. But after 1993, the inspectors never reappeared until the 2010 raid. The reason was political.

In 1994 Tom Ridge, a pro-abortion Republican, was elected governor, succeeding the antiabortion Democrat Bob Casey. According to the grand jury, Ridge administration officials "concluded that inspections would be 'putting a barrier up to women' seeking abortions. Better to leave clinics to do as they pleased." The new policy did away with all regular inspections of abortion clinics. Mr. Ridge's lassitudinous approach was bipartisan, continued by his successor, Democrat Ed Rendell, who resumed the inspections only after the 2010 raid.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Gosnell and have already obtained guilty pleas from eight of his former staffers. The grand jury's report should also be seen as an indictment of America's post-Roe abortion industry. Its indifference—at best—to legal limits made possible the deaths of untold numbers of babies, lending credence to the argument that legal abortion is a slippery slope to infanticide.

Meanwhile, the claim that Roe v. Wade made America safe from back-alley abortion stands exposed as a cruel hoax, and a deadly one for women and children alike.

Readily available birth control for all ages would solve part of the problem.   Not having babies being born as a money making proposition for those that can't afford them would additionally help the situation.     When a 14 year old girl upon getting pregnant utters "GRANDMA says I am duh Bread winner" there is a problem!

I was going to suggest a quick reversal for a segment of the population - lets try using that old outdated morality model we trashed in the 70's, teach abstinence, suspend welfare for multiple child families, encourage mothers & fathers to marry, stay in the same house, vote for candidates that encourage job/business growth, and try shaming young folks into understanding that we do not expect them to have children with several different partners before they earn a high school diploma.

At least as a start...

The other half of the country can keep things as they are - lets see which side we tax in 5 years in order to support the other side.

Again the propaganda filled aid epidemic combined with the Lewinsky "messin' around completely changed the culture on sexual matters with the 21 and under generation.  Abstinence is just sticking your head in the sand and refusing to see reality.   Just say no!  didn't work in the 80's for drugs, and one look at the "Friends with benefits" today and there is no way you can turn back the clock.   My suggestions are realistic in the current environment.   As you suggest abstinence.... do you honestly believe that will ever stifle the free handout given for popping out babies to those that really can't afford them?  How are they ever going to afford that new Cadillac Escalade payment?
